Okay, so you might need a little help making the connection, but the fact is, that the third annual Ice Expression Gala and Silent A u ctio n Sunday at Oakville Arena is an awe some way to kick-start your Christmas festivities. Sure, there are lots of professional yuletide offerings in Toronto, but what better way to capture the spirit o f the festive season than to wander down to your local arena for a cup o f hot chocolate and a skating performance o f the simplest and purest form. Young skaters from Ice Expression's four synchronized skat ing teams have been busy polishing their routines for the gala, perform ances that they will take on the road beginning in January as their competi tive season gets under way. Even at the grassroots level, this alternative team sport for girls is a treat to watch, as skaters combine the grace of dance with the speed and strength o f skating, to execute armwork, edges, turns and spins in uni son. This year, as Oakville continues to re-build its synchronized skating pro gram, four teams will take the ice for the gala, from the youngest, leam-toskate pre-juveniles to the more experi enced novice team, which finished sixth at the 2004 Canadian National Championships in Brandon, Manitoba.
