With the support of the KRG Children's Charitable Foundation, the scholarship program will award $100,000 each to four eligible young people from the GTA who plan to complete a post-secondary degree in the areas of science, technology, engineering or math academic paths that directly influence ongoing work to end the disease. Young adults who have grown up with MS in their family, or live with MS themselves, often face a number of hardships throughout their childhood that can impact their ability to pursue a post-secondary education, said an MS Society of Canada press release. "MS is a disease that impacts the whole family and often creates difficult financial burdens," said Sylvia Leonard, national vicepresident, talent, programs and services, MS Society of Canada. "As a result of the uncertainty that MS brings, many young people affected by the disease find their post-secondary goals interrupted or unachievable. With the Follow the Leader Scholarship Program, we want to ensure that these students are relieved of the financial constraints and inspired to become our MS leaders of the future." No one should have to compromise their goals, added Amanda Piron, an MS ambassador who lives with MS. "(The scholarship program) removes the financial stress and helps students focus on what really matters achieving academic success and working towards ending MS." The charitable foundation's chairman, Steven H. Wise, said it is proud to help young people affected by MS attain their post-secondary education and give them the potential to be a part of impacting the future of MS.
