Uppal will be speaking at the Central Branch Auditorium, 120 Navy St., on Thursday, March 12 from 7-8:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15 for the event and are now on sale at all library branches. Uppal, an Ottawa native, completed her B.A. in English and Creative Writing from York University in 1997, an M.A. in English from the University of Toronto in 1998, and a Ph.D. in English literature from York University in 2003. In addition to being an acclaimed poet, author and playwright, Uppal also teaches at York University where she co-ordinates the school's Creative Writing Program. Uppal's book, Projection: Encounters With My Runaway Mother, was nominated for both the Governor General's Literary Award for NonFiction and the Hilary Weston Prize for NonFiction in 2013. Projection relates the remarkable story of Uppal's search for her mother who fled to Brazil and abandoned her, her brother and quadriplegic father when she was just a child. At the library's March 12 event, Uppal will not only elaborate on her incredible journey and writing process, but shed some light on her soon-to-be-published short story collection, Cover Before Striking.
