But where the Baja differs is in the pickup 'bed' which is, in essence, the cargo area of the Outback Wagon scooped out behind the second row seat to create a storage area. Subaru calls it their Switchback System that permits reconfiguration of the rear seating area and the cargo bed to meet a variety of needs when transport ing people and cargo. The rear seat cushion folds upward, its reinforced metal bottom forming a front cargo wall. The seatback also folds flat, its back surface covered in a durable, slipresistant material. To carry long items, such as skis or surfboards, the bed pass through opens and rests to lock with the lowered seat back. The expandable 1,055-mm (41.5inch) truck bed can handle a variety of gear, and lowering the tailgate and attached accessory bed extender length ens the bed to 1,536-mm (60.5 inches) enough for a couple of dirt bikes. When the extended bed and lowered seat back are combined, the total load length becomes 1,974 mm (77.7 inches) enough for a good-sized ladder. The Baja has a rated towing capacity of 1,080-kg (2,400 pounds). Built to stand up to rugged use, the Baja's double-wall, all-steel bed houses an integrated molded plastic, liner that is both slip-resistant and extremely easy to clean. A dual-illumination bed light, four tie-down hooks and the ability to create different load levels are built in. Not shown at the launch of the Baja, I happened to be at the recent Tall Pines Rally in Perry Sound where I did see a Subaru team support vehicle bed cover that snaps around the rim of the bed that would keep most of the weather ele ments out. I was told the cover is com ing as an option. One thing for sure, however, is the handling. Outside of the specially engi neered WRX, this Baja has to be the best tracking Soob ever. Maybe it is the two, huge tubular supports linking the roof to the chassis, maybe it is the ring-shaped cross members that uses the A-, B- and C-pillars to create a reinforcing ring around the passenger, or maybe it is the subframes used for the suspension. Whatever it is, this Soob with its AWD and slick five-speed can be hus tled down a gravel road with confi dence. Backed by four-disc brakes with ABS, stopping is straight and sure. You can get the rear to swing out a bit on gravel, but the AWD moves in pretty quickly to control the grip and almost automatically put the car back on a neu tral keel. At no time did the Baja seem out of breath or unwilling to do what was asked. As with all Legacys, this is a rewarding car to drive, and if you keep to the service schedules, should last you a decade. I know my own Subaru Loyale did and it is still running 12 years later. Price is, however, another matter. At 35,695 for the five-speed and $36,795 for the optional automatic, the Baja is not cheap. On the upside, it is loaded with options and the abilities of the AWD are worth more than the entire cost of the vehicle, if it gets you out of an emergency situation we all face once or twice in our lives. I'm not sure if the Baja is going to attract the kind of attention the Outback and the WRX have. You can view the Baja as the best of all worlds or as neither fish not fowl. But then, Subaru has always been a bit of an iconoclast in the automotive world, which is one of the reasons peo ple seem to love them. f @ A U T O P ilR K 1999 GMC YUKON SLf <2001 CHEV CORVETTE COUI Starcraft Version 9-04826 Auto, 10,000 kms.
