Team Ayden and OMAC martial arts studio raise more than $28K for Arthritis Society OMAC World Class Martial Arts Studio recently held its Taekwondo Juvenile Arthritis Tournament and Family Fun Day fundraiser and garnered $28,402 for The Arthritis Society and Team Ayden. Seven-year-old Ayden Soares has juvenile arthritis and last year had to tell his instructors at OMAC he would have to give up his dream of becoming a black belt as a result of starting chemotherapy to ease the pain. Instead, his instructors worked with Ayden and helped him achieve his brown belt in March. Surpassing goal OMAC decided to put on its charity tournament and family event, with an initial goal of $15,000, as a way to spread awareness in the community on childhood arthritis and help raise funds for research into the disease and find a cure. The Arthritis Society fundraises to support programs and research for the more than four million Canadians living with arthritis. In Hamilton, Burlington, Brantford, Niagara and Oakville, the rate of frequency is close to one in five people living with arthritis. The Birmingham Bank Bed Challenge is an annual event in in the spring where Oakville's six major banks -- BMO Bank of Montreal, CIBC, National Bank, Royal Bank, Scotiabank and TD Canada Trust -- raise money at their local branches to purchase hospital beds for the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). This year's funds will be going towards the new hospital set to open in December. To date, more than $1 million has been raised from the initiative. The campaign culminates with a final race day challenge where each bank sends a team of employees to race beds. In addition to the six banks competing this year, the race has been opened to allow community businesses to register a bed. The event also includes children's activities, a pancake breakfast and coffee. Held from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., the event takes place at Towne Square, 94 George St. and Lakeshore Road West.
