By-election is July 13 to fill Ward 6 council seat by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, April 30, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville council voted Monday to officially declare the Ward 6 councillor seat, formerly held by the late Max Khan, vacant and it would be filled through a by-election scheduled for Monday, July 13. The seat has been empty since Khan's sudden death at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on March 29. He had gone to the hospital the previous day with flu-like symptoms. Ward 6 Town and Regional Councillor Tom Adams, who brought the motion forward, said it was appropriate to fill the council vacancy through by-election instead by appointment given how early it is in this term of council. "I think the residents of Ward 6 should have the opportunity to choose their own councillor," said Adams. "A number of by-elections have been held across Ontario over the last 10 years and while I would say the turnout rate of residents to those by-elections is lower than at regular elections I wouldn't say it is so dramatically low that it is not worth having." Adams said a July 13 voting day means Nomination Day would be Friday, May 29, allowing for a month-long period where so it would not conflict with the coming federal election and fewer residents would be away on vacation. There already appears to be interest in the vacant seat with Ward 6 resident Dr. Natalia Lishchyna declaring her candidacy for the position Tuesday. The Oakville chiropractor challenged Eve Adams for the federal Conservative nomination for the new Oakville-North Burlington riding last summer. Both candidates ultimately withdrew their candidacy amid allegations of each other's wrongdoing. The Conservative Party of Canada indefinitely postponed that vote to choose a candidate and launched an investigation, however, the results have yet to be made public. Khan would have run as the Liberal candidate for Oakville-North Burlington. Term of office runs to 2018 The term of office for the vacant seat will be from July 20, 2015-Nov. 30, 2018.
