Haynes helps UIndy capture NCAA golf title by Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver Staff As the NCAA Division II championships opened, there were few golfers with as much momentum as Annika Haynes. She was coming off a second-place finish at the East Super Regional -- her third top-four finish in a month, including a third at the conference championship -- and had just been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference freshman of the year. At one point during the opening round of the national championship, the Oakville native birdied four of five holes on her way to a 73 that left her tied for third place. But the momentum stalled when she shot an 84 the next day to drop to 24th. "She was really upset after that second round," said University of Indianapolis Greyhounds coach Brent Nicoson. "All her teammates gathered around her and said, `You carried us all year, it's our turn to carry you.'" Though Haynes shot an 80 the next day , she bounced back to deliver the second-best round of the tournament on the final day , firing a one-under 71 that helped the Greyhounds capture the national title. "She'll do that," Nicoson said. "She's not afraid to play in big tournaments. She's a gamer and when the lights come on, she's ready. That's just how she's wired." It didn't take the Greyhounds coach long to figure that out. He knew he had a strong incoming group with Haynes, Paxton DeHaven and Karli LaGrotte -- ranked the second-best recruiting class in the country. But even Nicoson was surprised by the instant success of the Greyhound freshmen. DeHaven won the season's first tournament, and Haynes -- following up on her sixth-place finish -- won the second, the Greyhounds' UIndy Fall Classic, by shooting rounds of 76 and 73 to top a field of 102 golfers. The Iroquois Ridge grad would go on to record nine top-10 finishes in 12 tournaments in her rookie season. She finished the year with a scoring average of 77.2 but bettered that mark in eight of her final 11 rounds of the season. "She's not only a leader on the course, she's a super kid to have on our team," Nicoson said. "She's a model student, a model teammate." Haynes had fallen to 34th place entering the final round of the national championship. And though Indy's 11-stroke lead looked comfortable at the beginning of the day , Rollins College posted the best single-day team score of the tournament, cutting the Greyhounds' lead to five. Haynes' 71, one of only four underpar rounds in the tournament, helped to hold off the challenge and lock up Indy's first national team title in any sport. Sagl leads Cal U into NCAA softball tourney Oakville's Alex Sagl won her 17th straight decision as the California University of Pennsylvania Vulcans won a 6-2 decision in extra innings to advance to the NCAA softball championships. Sagl, who has a record of 27-4 this season, allowed eight hits and one walk against West Virginia Wesleyan in the NCAA Super Atlantic Regional championship game. The junior pitcher was named the Daktronics/Division II Conference Commissioners Association Atlantic Region pitcher of the year. The Oakville Trafalgar graduate has a 1.27 earnedrun average and has struck out a career-high 263 batters while walking just 44 over 203.1 innings. Sagl's strikeout total is the most by a Vulcans pitcher since 1998. The Vulcans, 41-11 this season and ranked No. 21 in the country , were set to meet fourth-ranked Dixie State in their NCAA opener yesterday (Thursday). Cal U made it to the NCAA tournament five times in six years between 1994-99, with national title in 1997 and 1998, but have not been back since. 29 | Friday, May 22, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Halton Minor Ball Hockey League Standings as of May 10, 2015 GP 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 GP 3 3 3 3 3 3 GP 3 3 3 3 3 3 GP 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 GP 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 GP 4 4 4 4 4 4 W 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 W 2 2 2 1 1 0 W 3 2 2 1 1 0 W 4 3 2 2 2 1 1 1 W 2 2 2 1 1 1 0 0 W 4 3 2 1 0 0 L 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 L 0 1 1 1 2 3 L 0 1 1 2 2 3 L 0 1 2 2 2 3 3 3 L 0 0 1 1 1 1 2 3 L 0 1 1 2 3 3 T 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 T 1 0 0 1 0 0 T 0 0 0 0 0 0 T 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 T 1 1 0 1 1 1 1 0 T 0 0 1 1 1 1 WIN % 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.5 WIN % 0.833 0.667 0.667 0.5 0.333 0 WIN % 1 0.667 0.667 0.333 0.333 0 WIN % 1 0.75 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.25 0.25 0.25 WIN % 0.833 0.833 0.667 0.5 0.5 0.5 0.167 0 WIN % 1 0.75 0.625 0.375 0.125 0.125 PTS 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 PTS 5 4 4 3 2 0 PTS 6 4 4 2 2 0 PTS 8 6 4 4 4 2 2 2 PTS 5 5 4 3 3 3 1 0 PTS 8 6 5 3 1 1 GF 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 GF 11 12 27 10 9 5 GF 23 32 14 23 13 5 GF 35 21 20 16 16 16 10 23 GF 16 11 13 17 13 8 4 2 GF 24 30 8 11 5 3 GA 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 GA 3 7 13 8 23 20 GA 7 23 8 31 13 28 GA 9 14 32 22 20 18 27 15 GA 9 4 13 14 11 9 11 13 GA 4 8 4 24 15 26 DIFF 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 DIFF 8 5 14 2 -14 -15 DIFF 16 9 6 -8 0 -23 DIFF 26 7 -12 -6 -4 -2 -17 8 DIFF 7 7 0 3 2 -1 -7 -11 DIFF 20 22 4 -13 -10 -23 Oakville's Annika Haynes fired a one-under par 71 to help the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds clinch the NCAA Division II women's golf title. The last time the Jr. B lacrosse squad squared off against Brampton, the Excelsiors scored last second goals in both the second and third periods to edge the Buzz 9-8. So when Brampton rallied from a 6-3 third-period deficit to tie the game, it looked like Oakville might be due for some more heartbreak. "I had hit the post a couple of times," said Eddie Renaud, who had been held goalless through the first 50 minutes. "Actually our whole offence had hit the post quite a few times." Renaud found the ideal time to find the mesh, though. His goal with 5:42 to play broke the 6-6 tie and he added another 37 seconds later. He capped his natural hat trick with an empty netter as the Buzz won Wednesday's game 9-6. "It was nice to get a little revenge on them," said Renaud, who has scored at least twice in each of his six games this season. The win improve the Buzz to 4-5 on the season, with three of those wins coming in the last four. Each of those victories saw the Buzz tied in the third period only to score the winner in the latter half of the period. "I think it's taken us a little bit of time Renaud's third-period hat trick sinks Excelsiors in 9-6 Buzz win to jel together," said Renault, who leads the Buzz with 18 goals and 30 points. "Getting our captain, Keyan McQueen, back for the last two games has helped pull us together, too." The Buzz can certainly use some momentum as it hosts the division-leading Halton Hills Friday at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre at 8 p.m. Oakville then hits the road for seven of its next eight games. McQueen had a goal and three assists for the Buzz Wednesday while Dalton Follows scored and set up two more. Adam Wolf, Jake Nyhuis, Mathew Dilella and Michael Dobko also scored while Kyle Hebert picked up the win in net. --Herb Garbutt, Oakville Beaver staff Soccer Player Development socceR pRoGRaMs that Develop plaYeRs InnovatIve technIques to Develop InDIvIDual skIll Game Based LearninG Brain Based LearninG Oakville Summer Registration Now Open! 905-467-2775 pRoGRaM DIRectoR: DIno lopez powered by www.apexfootylab.com Learn More and register at This ad is courtesy of & Proud Supporters
