www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, June 18, 2015 | 26 Debate camp will run over the summer at White Oaks continued from p.25 Debate is sociable and "very competitive," Guthrie said, as the students see the connection between doing well at tournaments and doing well in their classes. "The analysis, the conciseness, the insight, the good ideas that they need in debate to make a good case. That whole business is intimately connected with doing well on an essay, doing well on a presentation in class," said Guthrie. Mittal, who placed third in the singlespeaker rankings at the senior national championships, said debating at the Canadawide level was a "really exciting thing." "Even just getting second and third was more than I imagined was possible, especially since we did so well at provincials," said Mittal. "You always want to win the finals, but even though we didn't, that was the best opportunity. It was a really great weekend." The 18-year-old Grade 12 student usually debates in English, as her first time competing bilingually was at the 2014 provincial tournament. "Sometimes the switch is what's challenging, but being able to speak French and debate in it (and) getting your mind around thinking in French is the most difficult part," said Mittal, who joined debate last year. "Once you start debating, it's not difficult because your mind starts naturally processing things in French. It's a lot of fun." Ethan Strathdee and Kashaf Salaheen recently returned from the International Competition for Young Debaters (ICYD) tournament at Cambridge University in England. In what Guthrie called a "very competitive" event, which included a series of debates on topics such as abolishing minimum wage, the two WOSS students finished near the middle of the standings. A second White Oaks debater was just named to the Canadian high school debate team -- Kiara Hassan, joining Metropolitansky, who qualified in Grade 8. WOSS will be hosting a debate camp from Aug. 24-28 for students in Grades 6-12, with all levels of experience and ability. They will be coached on speech and debate from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during each day of the program. Part of the camp is for students who want to strengthen their skills for competitive tournaments. "The debaters enjoy mixing with their peers who have similar interests. That naturally lends well to a really vigorous, competitive atmosphere. Not everyone will be the top debater every year, not everyone will win big trophies," said Guthrie. "All of them will benefit from the skills, ideas, thinking and reading that they've done with me in debate." For more information, contact Guthrie by email at guthrieh@hdsb.ca.
