www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 26, 2015 | 26 Halton District School Board Students of Excellence The Halton District School Board recently hosted its 28th annual A Celebration of Student Excellence. One student representative was selected from each elementary and secondary school in the public school system to receive the Student Excellence Award. The honour goes to students who demonstrate outstanding qualities in more than one of the following areas: academic, vocational, athletic, self-improvement, community work, citizenship and student leadership. Numerous Oakville students were honoured at this year's ceremony. This is the first instalment profiling the local recipients. The remaining recipients will be published in future issues of the Oakville Beaver. Photos and profiles were supplied to the Beaver by the Halton District School Board. · Coleman Stucke, Grade 8, Abbey Lane: Coleman is well-rounded and a positive role model for classmates. He has a positive approach to life that is contagious. He is an excellent, natural leader, and well-liked by his peers. Coleman is very accomplished in math, an outstanding volleyball and basketball player, is a bass section leader in concert band and a PALS (Playground Activity Leader for Students) leader and mentor. · Jinisha Patel, Grade 8, Brookdale: Jinisha demonstrates quiet, determined leadership that is clearly respected by her peers, staff and the community. She puts forth a determined effort in all endeavours, maintains a high level of academic success, and participates in virtually all facets of Brookdale life. · Andrea Girard, Grade 8, Captain R. Wilson: Andrea is positive and excels in all aspects of school life. A member of the concert and jazz bands and the choir, Andrea is also involved in soccer, volleyball, basketball, crosscountry, track and eld and intramurals. She helps coach the junior volleyball team. Outside school, she plays with a soccer club, volleyball team, competes on a ski racing team and is working on her lifeguard certi cation. A Leadership Council member, she helps organize events at school, participates in Art Club and shares her love of reading. · Louise Dean, Grade 8, E.J. James: Louise is a conscientious worker who excels in all her academic program. She participates in a variety of extracurricular activities including: Drama Club, Art Club, Battle of the Books, Student Leadership Committee, Stage Band (vocals) and Me to We. · Zoe Prystawski, Grade 8, Eastview: Louise is a conscientious worker who participates in a variety of the extracurricular activities including: Drama Club, Art Club, Battle of the Books, Student Leadership Committee, Stage Band (vocals) and Me to We. She works co-operatively and collaboratively with all classmates and demonstrates respect to teachers and peers at all times. · Emma Walker, Grade 8, Emily Carr: Emma leads others, yet knows how to stand back and let others shine. Emma is genuinely kind to others, encourages her peers and will speak up when she feels passionately. · Kate Albrighton, Grade 8, Falgarwood: Kate is an academic student involved in many clubs and sports. She is a model citizen, always leading by example. She goes out of her way to assist peers and teachers. Kate's motivations are altruistic and pure. · Amy Ecclestone, Grade 8, Forest Trail: Amy is an exemplary Grade 8 student who has been a student leader participating in and beyond the classroom. Her positive and caring demeanor, willingness and hard work to achieve her goals, and involvement in the promotion of a positive and welcoming school environment are reasons for our selection. · Bianca Matthews, Grade 6, Gladys Speers: Bianca maintains an exemplary academic level and is a consistent source of thoughtful and insightful input. Daily , she leads Kindergarten students in from their morning bus ride to their classrooms, keeping them in line with a tender touch. She has been a global citizen on Gladys Speers' Gator Council, helping spearhead various fundraising initiatives. Open-minded and accepting, she has been in Junior Choir, and a key member of the school's musical theatre production. · Brenna Foley, Grade 8, Heritage Glen: Brenna is considerate and responsible and quietly leads by example, maintaining a high level of academics. She has been a leader in extracurricular activities, including Student Parliament, and Me to We. She has been on the volleyball, football, basketball and cross-country teams, is an active leader for the athletic council and helps run intramurals for younger students. Brenna has dedicated tremendous time and leadership for two years on yearbooks and is this year's editor. · Mercedes Oada, Grade 8, James W . Hill: Mercedes' academic excellence, leadership both within and outside the school community work, and showing to be a role model in TRIBES make her a worthy Student of Excellence. · Erin Dane, Grade 8, Joshua Creek: Erin is highly respected by staff and students for her academics, her work ethic and her involvement in extracurricular activities. She is involved in concert band, student parliament and the Grade 8 yearbook club. Her strong leadership skills are evident in her work on the Athletic Council and the Senior Girl's Volleyball team. · Ethan Smith, Grade 8, Maple Grove: Ethan is a hard-working, inclusive and conscientious individual. Ethan leads by example, carries on group discussions and is always willing to help his classmates and teachers. He is involved in many extracurriculars including Student Parliament, intramurals, Vex Robotics, science fair and the Safe Schools Action Team. · Yuton Cao, Grade 8, Montclair: Yutong is a quiet leader who is polite and considerate. She is creative and imaginative and possesses strong academic abilities. Yutong is inclusive in her relations and interactions with others, is active in the school community; participates in sports, student parliament and school community newsletter. · Jacqueline Tomazic, Grade 8, Munn's: Jacqueline is an exemplary Grade 8 student, has excelled in French Immersion and participated in many leadership and co-curricular opportunities. She is a respected and collaborative classmate, and is an excellent school ambassador for the school. see Halton on p.27
