Well, the old saying doesn't quite sum up the situation, but you get the idea. The O akville Longhorns, the unprecedented eight-tim e Northern Football Conference champions who went on to win the inaugural national senior football cham pionship in Winnipeg last fall, are coming back to Oakville. And that will likely mean more than half a dozen games this spring and summer at their traditional, home at Bronte Field on Lakeshore Road. For the last two years, the' Horns were forced to extend their dynasty on foreign soil, mostly in Burlington, because of money owed to the town for the rental of Bronte Field. The (very) short of it is that while the `Horns on-field organization was second to none, the tedious but neces sary board room stuff got pushed aside, which is not all that uncommon for these types of volunteer, commu nity organizations. We're not talking about a multi million dollar sports franchise, after all. To quote Richard Rebiere, the third string quarterback and the new vice president of publicity, "this is really a love of the game program where the guys pay to play." The `Horns believe they have "the best football program on the field in the country," to again quote Rebiere, who may admittedly be biased. But you can't argue with their record or their rock solid stability in the sometimes unstable NFC where teams have come and gone in recent years like Raptor first round draft picks. And now, the `Horns have vowed to extend their first class, on-field pro gram into their boardroom. The alumni association (which actually includes active players) have taken over the team and installed a new executive, led by longtime allstar centre Karl Kustor as president (See 'N F C ' inside, page D4) Photos by Barrie Erskine Oakville Beaver photographer Barrie Erskine caught a pair of exciting moments in this MOM's novice red house league hockey championship game, from Sunday, which was won by the Eagles (white jerseys) 4-3 over the Vikings (red jerseys), in overtime. In the top photo, the Vikings tied the game at 3-3 with just 25.1 seconds remaining. ' And then on to overtime where the bottom photo was taken -- of the overtime winner for the Eagles. MORE PHOTOS, D5! MOM's Week wraps up tonight You can just bet there will be a bunch of tired hockey MOM's after tonight. That's because the volunteer group's much anticipated championship and awards week draws to a close tonight with the midget house league champi onship games at River Oaks (with the midget white game at 6:20 p.m. and the midget red game at 7:50 p.m.). In all, when the final buzzer sounds tonight, a total of 22 house league championship games will have been played since it got under way on Sunday. And, as usual, the Oakville Hockey MOM's organized the entire week for the Minor Oaks Hockey Association (MOHA) teams. And that includes % picking up the ice rental costs, arrang ing the games and paying for all of the trophies. The price tag, not including their volunteer time, is about $12,000. Actually, these volunteer hockey M OM's will not have much time, at all, to catch their breath as their major fundraiser -- a dinner/dance at RattleSnake Point -- will be held Saturday, April 14. Just a few tickets remain for this event which typically sells out. Also, items for the silent auction are always welcome. Phone Nancy Brooks at the MOHA office at 338-9220. Check future edition for more photos and complete MOM's week results. Volpe loses high scoring Halton Classic 119-101 While going up for a basket, Oakville Trafalgar's Sean-Michael Stephens is nudged by Nelson's Chris Keith in the senior all-star game. Photo by Peter C. McCusker In a real rarity, the battle for provincial bas ketball supremacy was waged between two Burlington schools with Nelson winning 54-45 over Notre Dame. It was probably no surprise, therefore, that at last Friday's annual Halton Classic all-star bas ketball game, which is competitive but definitely emphasising fun (not to mention collecting food for the food bank), that the Burlington-based Richardson Division did triumph over the Oakville-based Volpe division in both the senior and junior games. High schools in Halton, both public and Roman Catholic, are loosely divided into two divisions, based roughly on Oakville (Volpe) and Burlington (Richardson)). The divisional make-up varies slightly each year, and this year, in fact, Oakville's Iroquois Ridge and Q.E. Park are playing out of the Richardson division. The annual Halton Classic, which was held this year at White Oaks Secondary School in Oakville, pits the two divisions against each other, and this year the Richardson won the senior game 119-101 and the junior game 67-54. Here's a rundown. SENIOR GAME Richardson Division 119, Volpe Division 101.
