Sammy is a church-going single mother, and Terry is a drifter who is always getting into trouble and occasionally landing in jail. One tangi ble thing keeps them together - the family home left to them by their par ents. When Terry comes to visit Sammy, this home becomes the meet ing place for their hearts and minds as they struggle to reconcile their conflict ing lives. (Rated AA; 109 minutes.) On Wednesday, April 18, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which has been nominated for 10 Oscars, will come to the Oakville Film Festival. Based on a novel by Wang Du Lu, the film starts with a revenge plot, then adds a feminist twist. A legendary mar tial artist decides to pass on his sword to a friend. Soon afterwards, the sword is stolen by a masked female, setting in motion events that test the bonds of family, love, duty, and sisterhood. (Rated PG: 119 minutes.) Based on his own childhood in Iran, director Bahman Ghobadi presents his first feature film, A Time fo r Drunken Horses, on Sunday, April 29. In a remote Kurdish village on the Iran/Iraq border, five motherless chil dren endure hard lives, burdened by responsibility and loss. With its sparse dialogue, rough settings and intimate view of Kurdish Life, Ghobadi's film is a simply told but very powerful tale. (Rated AA: 80 minutes.) Local guitarist plays Friday Oakville guitarist Warren Nicholson will play at the Merriam School of Music (MSM) on Friday at 7 p.m. Admission is $8 at the door; free to MSM students. The program will include Johann Sebastian Bach's First Cello Suite and The Cathedral by Augustine Barrios Mangore as well as Villa Lobos' preludes and etudes, and some Spanish music by Isaac Albeniz. Nicholson, a Oakville Trafalgar High School graduate, said he has "always been crazy about music," an attitude that took him to the M anhattan School of Music i n . New York, where he studied after university. "It's the centre of it all, as far as music is concerned," he said. "It's pretty international with three major conservatories. People come from all over the world to study there." Nicholson, who won the Artists International New York Debut Competition in 1997, made his debut at Carnegie recital hall in February the following year. O akville guitarist W arren Nicholson will give a recital at the Merriam School of Music on Friday, beginning at 7 p.m. He has premiered new works for the guitar at the CBC's Glenn Gould Studio and the Bache Miller Theatre at Columbia University.
