continued from p.1 "We need to know who you are in order to help you and help determine what you need in order to better this community. Those relationships are what makes us work," said Katherine Dziedzic, YMCA of Oakville team leader of community initiatives. This is the second year the community socials have been held. The goal is for residents to benefit and "take the opportunity to come out and share dinner with us" to find out what the Y has to offer, Dziedzic said. "We have a lot of programs that run in this neighbourhood. We partner with Kerr Street Mission(KSM), often for this community alone (Maurice and Margaret Drive), and run different things," said Dziedzic. From a community partner's perspective, Dziedzic said it's amazing to get together and Agencies can refine offerings with public feedback figure out "where our strengths are and start building those partnership programs," noting the Y has joint initiatives with KSM, ArtHouse, HCHC and other groups. "It gives the participants an opportunity to really get an idea of what's going on and to meet us and for us to meet them." Halton police Sgt. Eric Schwab of the Oakville Community Mobilization Bureau (CMB) noted his unit has attended every community social. He said the spirit of community is "really embodied in events like this. The strength of a community is its mobilization, its liaison and its engagement with each other -- whether that's members of emergency services (police, fire, ambulance), community organizations or municipal organizations." The social gatherings was the idea of Sophia Makridis, the HCHC community relations coordinator, who extended an invitation to police. The staff sergeant said the overall turnout at the events has been "really good." "It's been really positive that the turnout has been so good, not only for the initiative, but also for those officers in attendance because it's given us the opportunity to meet, chat, and get to know so many members of our community that we didn't know before," said Schwab. The Y runs numerous free or low-cost community initiatives in Oakville, which varies by location, Dziedzic said, noting its Together As 3 | Friday, July 17, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Girls (TAG) program is offered at St. James Elementary School and the Rebecca Street YMCA. "It's a program that is strictly for girls to come and feel safe, be in an environment where they get to learn about other girls and talk about the things that really matter to them most," said Dziedzic, adding the Y also runs programs for multi-sport, photography and several with ArtHouse, to name a few. "We want to be able to reach everybody and we want to enrich this community and let everybody know they're welcome in our doors."
