B4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday April 4, 2001 Wellspring receives $700 book donation from client' s estate Wellspring member Eva Kaminski, who was only 46 years of age, died recently after a short four-month with cancer. Eva was a lawyer with CIBC in Toronto and found out about W ellspring H alton/Peel through a Sunnybrook treatment centre. Eva was a voracious reader and had a library o f approxim ately 1,700 books. During one of her visits to Wellspring at 2545 Sixth Line, she noticed its library shelves rather empty, and decided that her library would be used to put books on the cen tre's shelves. After Eva's death, her close friend Kim Liddle contacted Second Editions Books owners John and Sheila Dixon, who offered to buy 1,500 of the books from Eva's estate, turning this dona tion o f literature into $700 cash for Wellspring. They money will be used to buy appropriate, cancer related books for Wellspring's library. The owners o f Second Editions Books at 312 Lakeshore Rd. E., Unit 1, call 905-338-6337, are happy to accept donated books and forward the money to Wellspring. "You're not just getting a bracelet, you're getting an information service that stands behind it. If you were on a blood thinner, for example, and the wrong medication was given in an emergency, it could kill you. MedicAlert speaks for you." Austin believes one in five Canadians need to wear a MedicAlert bracelet for conditions such as asthma, allergies, heart conditions, diabetes, Alzheimer's Disease and kidney fail ure, to name a few. In the event of an emergency, leav ing a person unconscious, paramedics can phone ahead to a health facility anywhere in the world, give the ID number on the bracelet, and immedi ately know what medications to give and not to give. The information can be constantly updated, and is available in 140 languages, 24 hours a day. "For Wendy Gunn, M edicAlert means she can leave home and know Adam is not as vulnerable. It gives her peace o f mind," says Austin. Even Adam has recognized the importance o f MedicAlert and hopes other children will not be as stubborn as he was about wearing the bracelet. "I want to make a difference in the world," he says. "I want any children with a medical condition to make sure they are enrolled with MedicAlert so they can stay safe." Austin does caution people about clever look-alikes, which do not offer the medical information service provid ed by MedicAlert. The cost of the actu al MedicAlert bracelet varies depend ing on the type chosen. This is the 40th anniversary for MedicAlert, a charity-run organization that just celebrated its one-millionth member. Enrollment brochures can be picked up a pharmacies and doctor's offices, or by calling 1-800-668-1507.
