Choirs learn by listening to others and performing By Carol Baldwin ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR I t's a world-class choir. That's why Janet Brown says she wants her students to be exposed to the musical talents of the Oakville Children's Choir (OCC). Brown, a music teacher at Sunningdale Pub lic School and director of its junior choir, has registered her school choir once again to partici pate in Sing - a half-day choral festival with the senior section of the OCC and its music director Glenda Crawford. "I have a wonderful choir here and I like to give them opportunities to perform. And I really admire Glenda Crawford and her choir, which I have followed since its inception," explains A K V 1 L L E Brown. "The qualities that I aspire to have in a choir are hers (Crawford's). So, it's a wonderful opportunity for us to have this role model to fol low." The choirs involved in this bi-annual choral festival each sing two pieces of their own choice and two of Crawford's choice. The latter two are rehearsed and then sung by all the par ticipating choristers, creating a mass choir pre sentation, says Brown. This format, she adds, gives her music students a chance to listen to the OCC and other school choirs, as well as to hear themselves as part o f a larger group. For Brown, hearing is believing; and for her Grade 4, 5 and 6 singers, listening to the OCC, gives them a vocal goal that is within their grasp. "If they see it modeled for them, they're more likely to understand than all the instruction that I might give them," she explains. `T hey say, `Oh, this is what you're talking about.'" During and after the rehearsal of the compul sory pieces, Crawford offers tips on how the vocals can be improved or how the vocalists can produce a more musically proficient sound. "Then we sing. After she's worked through the piece with us, then we sing the piece through," says Brown. "The kids are really thrilled to be there." And Crawford is thrilled to have them, since, as a music teacher herself, she knows that oppor tunities for school choirs to perform with other choirs are limited. However, Sing , which is a non-competitive event, is only offered every- other year. So, any choirs wishing to participate in the next festival will have to wait until 2003. "I can see it working into an every-year event if we can get sponsors," Crawford says, explaining that she would like to see a few cor porate executives at this year's event in the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts on Monday, April 9, so they can see how the festi val works. Then, perhaps, they would take up the corporate sponsorship challenge. "Laidlaw has sponsored it this time. And we are giving each choir a plaque and a CD of O Canada , sung by the (Oakville) Children's Choir," she says, "And each child gets a pencil. We've got pencils all made up with our name on it and Sing and the date on it."
