This week we investigate briefly the Italian, French, and English influences, as well as the contemporary landscaping approach. Italian Renaissance Landscaping: The Italian style is linked to the concept of the garden as a place for recreation, meditation and relax ation of the body and the spirit. Fountains, canals, flowers and sculpture all played a part in what is really a combination of art and nature. Often Italian landscapes incorpo rated staircases, terraces, hidden entrances and elaborate gateways. Italian baroque landscaping also introduced the concept o f the atrium and idea of extending the house out into the garden. Italian landscaping tended to be a three-dimensional creation and simplicity and clarity were its main strengths. French Landscaping: The French had a long tradition in "landsculping" dating back to the days o f Rome. They were very fond of building gardens that highlighted the visual contrast between the dark, intriguing woodlands and the light created by open broad spaces. The French tradition grew out of the background o f the powerful aristocracy and court. French landscaping represented m an's supremacy over nature - and rather than a place to meditate and contemplate - the garden was viewed as an open-air stadium for the court's pleasure and amusement. The designer strived to forge an impression o f great space and freedom, which were the French landscaping defining tra ditions. British/Tiidor Landscaping: The British cul tivated a landscaping style that was picturesque while based in large part on the local climate and (See `Contemporary' page C7) A pretty bedroom in a fabulous French Country style is fit for your very own little princess. Growing up beautiful in French Country style Interior designer Jane Lockhart, host of HGTV's One House - Two Looks and % spokesperson on colour and design for Benjamin Moore, also has a busy interior design private practice. Recently a client asked her to design a soft, feminine room for their young daughter -- without even a hint of pink. As you can see, Jane has proven that you don't need pink to be pretty. Basing her design on the tra ditional French Country style, she has created a practical room which is not over-pretty or overfussy, and which can change as its owner grows up and her interests and tastes evolve. The neutral colours -- walls and ceiling -- are from the Benjamin Moore Historical Collection, Quincy Tan and Shaker Beige. Trim colour is a very pale creme, almost white. The walls are treated with vertical broad, washed, stripes -- a casual look, easy to carry out. Remove the bows, and the room becomes more suitable for an older child. You can move closer to the authentic French Country look by replacing the drapes with a red or blue accented pattern. Later you might want to change fur nishings to a more grown-up style, but be sure to keep the colouring light. Rowers and flower motifs in blues, yellows and white would be true to the initial style as well. You can do it! Paint o Walls AquaPearl HC-25 Quincy Tan o Washed Stripes AquaPearl HC-45 Shaker Beige and AquaGlaze o Trim AquaPearl 967 - Cloud White Process 1. Paint the wall with a base -coat of AquaPearl HC-25 and leave it to dry. 2. Pour AquaPearl HC-45 into a short-filled bottle of AquaGlaze until the paint reaches the white rim. Replace the lid and shake vigorously until paint is mixed thoroughly. For a gallon, stir with stir stick to blend colour. 3. Determine the desired width of stripes around the room and mark the wall lightly in pencil. Use a level to ensure the marks are straight. We did 12" stripes, floor to ceiling around the room. 4. Apply tape around the room. To ensure that every other stripe is 12" wide, apply tape on the outside of the marks on the first stripe, and inside on the second, outside on the third and so on. 5. Pour mixed glaze into a bucket or tray. Dip the cotton rag into the mixture and apply in a circular motion within the 12" stripes. Remove tape once stripe is complete.
