www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, August 27, 2015 | 18 More than a third of drivers in Region survey say they carpool continued from p.14 cent of households purchased Energy Star appliances. Some 74 per cent knew climate change could affect human health, including eight per cent, who thought human health could be affected positively. Only 23 per cent were aware alternative sources of power could be purchased in Halton, but that was still more than double the awareness of the 2009 survey. However, only four per cent of households actually purchased energy from these alternative sources. Some 54 per cent of residents said they turned off lights when leaving a room for 15 minutes or longer while 16 per cent said they dried most of their clothes on clotheslines or racks. Clothesline drying decreased as household incomes rose. More than a third of drivers said they carpooled, but carpooling also decreased as age increased. All told, 71 per cent of drivers said they checked their vehicle's tire pressure in the month preceding the survey. Men were more likely than women to do so. The majority of Halton drivers didn't know there were bylaws against letting their vehicles idle although 55 per cent of drivers said they never let their vehicles idle for more than a minute. Milton drivers can be excused -- the town doesn't have an idling bylaw. However, 56 per cent of Oakville drivers didn't know their town had a bylaw and 48 per cent of Burlington motorists also didn't know their city had such a bylaw. In Halton Hills, 71 per cent of drivers also had no idea their town had a bylaw. Just more than half the residents said they used bicycles or walked as a form of active transportation with the majority being in the 18-24 age group. Some 17 per cent of residents also said they burned wood inside their homes during the winter and 12 per cent burned wood outside during the summer and those with higher incomes were more likely to do so despite the fact burning wood releases harmful pollutants into the air, affecting both outdoor and indoor air quality. Exposure to wood smoke can cause respiratory illness, worsen asthma and decrease lung function. Each of Halton's four municipalities has its own bylaws that restrict or limit the burning of wood outdoors. Severe weather events caused by climate change, such as the 2013 ice storm and the 2014 flooding in Burlington, highlight the impact climate change can have on Halton residents.
