C4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, May 23, 2001 Concert series ends with `Messiah' The choir of St. Jude's-Anglican Church, Oakville, will be performing G. F. H andel's Messiah (Parts 2 and 3), often acclaimed the finest oratorio ever written, on Saturday, May 26 at 8 p.m. The concert will be the 10th anniversary finale of the Celebration o f the Arts concert series, which has brought such renowned per formers to Oakville as Liona Boyd, Quartetto Gelato, Michael Schade, and the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble. Traditionally, the final event of the series is a gala Choral concert sung by the St. Jude's Choir, conducted by John Laing. This year's concert will also include a team of soloists Janet O berm eyer (soprano), Allyson McHardy (mezzo soprano), Dennis Giesbrecht (tenor), and Kevin Bradshaw (bari tone), as well as a chamber orchestra. Some tickets are still available, and can be purchased for $20, $18 for seniors or students, by calling the church office at 905-844-3972. Special anniversary edition posters of Franklin and his woodland friends were available for a minimum donation of $2 each to the Breakfast for Learning program. Breakfast for Learning is a nation al non-profit organization that provides nutrition programs to children across Canada. National music school returns Once again, Appleby College will host the National Guitar Workshop (NGW), acting as its Canadian campus from July 22 to 27. The NGW has been operating for 18 years with eight campuses throughout North America, including Los Angeles, Austin, Seattle and San Francisco. The Canadian campus was estab lished nine years ago, with Appleby serving ashost for the past four years. Students of all ages and at all levels o f ability are offered a variety of courses in all musical styles, such as rock, jazz, blues, acoustic and classical. M inor courses in songwriting, improvi sation and slide guitar, among others, are also offered, as well as courses for bass, drums and keyboard. Seminars, clinics and concerts will be per formed by world class players. This year's guest artists include Rik Emmett (Canadian Rock 'n ' Roll Hall of Fame), a virtu oso guitarist and singer/songw riter with an award-winning, multi-gold and platinum history; Don Ross, two-time winner of the U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship; and David Sinclair, who has made TV appear ances on the Grammy and Juno Awards and will be releasing his first 3 indoor riding arenas.
