The team now has two weeks to gear up before competing against the best teams in the country at the Canadian Final, June 2-3. The Oakville Cobras won the Ontario tournament by defeating the Erin Mills Eagles, of Mississauga, 1-0 in the final of the twelve-team girls event. The Cobras, who finished the day with a 3-1-0 record, scored 5 goals in the tournament and only had 1 against. The Cobras will now move on to the Canadian Final where they will face the Conquerants de Laval of Laval, Que., (winner of the Quebec Elite Soccer League) North Shore Runnin' Rebels of North Vancouver, BC, (win ner o f the Nike Prem ier Cup BC Qualifying Tournament) and Scarborough United Scorpions (the Canadian Final host team representa tive). In a strong field of 12 o f the top provincial teams, the Cobras were grouped with fellow Provincial league teams, Richmond Hill and London Comets. The Cobras prevailed with a strong 2-0 showing against Richmond, goals courtesy of a Karen Zmirak free-kick, and a great header from Heather Patterson. The Cobras advanced by holding London to a scoreless tie in their second game. In semi-final action, the Cobras were m atched against the Oshawa Kicks, last y ear's Canadian Nike Champions. In a w ell-contested game, the Cobras found themselves one down on a penalty kick. The Cobras piled on the pressure and were rewarded with a goal from Vanessa Dumlao. Overtime periods could not break the deadlock and it took a penalty shoot out to decide it. Goalkeeper Ann Lavallee came up big with two saves, while Zmirak, Corey Morgan, Ally Skinner and Laura Bandy converted for the Cobras. The final game pitted the Cobras against Erin Mills Eagles. Erin Mills, a talented Under 14 team, had shown little respect for their elders in tying w ith Niagara, and defeating Burlington and Kitchener. In the final game, the Cobras were unable to score in regulation time, missing several good chances and hit ting the post. In the first sudden death overtime period, the Cobras continued to attack, quickly winning a comer. Bandy and Zmirak worked a short comer-kick, allowing Zmirak to drive into the box and fire an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. The Cobras team members are Katie Capron, Courtney Linton, Erin Douglas, Laura Lorenz,Elaine Dumas, Corey M organ, Vanessa Dumlao, Stephanie Muldoon, Amanda Fallis, Heather Patterson, Helen Halbert, (S e e 'C o b ra s ' p a g e D 5) The Oakville Cobras celebrate their win at the Nike Premier Cup Ontario Qualifying Tournament. The Phoenix continued their winning ways and the first casualty was the Milton Magic who disappeared after being ham m ered 8-0 with goals from Am anda Cicchini, Phillipa Goddard, Danielle Bernier (3), Gizelle Panton (2) and Natasha Cheong. In the tournament's second game against the Kitchener Spirit, the Phoenix scored first on a goal by Cicchini, but some fine saves by the Spirit goalkeeper kept the opponents in the game until they scored a late goal to finish with a 1-1 tie. The Phoenix rebounded with a convinc ing 6-0 victory over the host Guelph team with goals from Bernier (3), Laura Cossitt, Olivia Nadon and Panton. In the semi-final game, Nadon, Bernier (2) and Goddard scored to give the Phoenix a 4-0 victory. This set up a rem atch against the Kitchener Spirit in the final game. The Kitchener goalkeeper, behind a solid defence, thwarted the Phoenix attackers on several occasion, but continuos pressure from a dominant Phoenix side ended with a winning goal by Cossitt on a pass from Panton. The tournament win was a team effort with Alicia Kuchma, Kelly Terceira, Sara Cheung, Kate Longmoore, M egan Kerr, Jennifer Saunders, Tania G anassini, Rebecca Readings, goalkeeper Laura Tacchi (with four shutouts) and Tessa Young adding to the goal scorers' contributions.
