Oakville followed up an 8-3 win over the Toronto Patriots Friday with a 6-5, double-overtime victory over the Pickering Panthers Sunday. Both contests were played at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. The Blades have now scored five goals or more in six straight outings, averaging nearly seven goals per game during that span. Oakville is tied with the Cobourg Cougars for the most goals in the league (70), but the Blades have played one fewer game. Peyton Reeves shone for Oakville Friday, recording a hat trick with his first three goals of the season. Tyler Rollo, Brayden Sampson, Josh Kosack, Eric Holland and Christian Rrajic also tallied for the Blades, with Patrick Kudla, Brendan Doherty, Drew Worrad and Rollo each recording two assists. Brendan McGlynn stopped 25 of 28 shots to earn the win in net. In Sunday's contest, Ryan Garvey scored 1:45 into the second overtime period -- the second time in the past month that he's scored in OT to give the Blades a win over Pickering. Following the goal, a fracas broke out between the teams, resulting in eight misconduct penalties. Blades forward Reeves (three games) and head coach Mike Tarantino (two games) subsequently received suspensions from the league as a result of the melee, while three Pickering players and their coach were suspended for a minimum of 22 combined games. Hornets strike early in weekend wins Scoring all of their goals in the opening five minutes of the game, the Oakville Hornets blanked the Kingston Ice Wolves 3-0 Saturday at Joshua's Creek Arenas. Sarah Fillier, Emma Maltais and Jessica Maggioni scored in a 2:58 span and Nikki Cece recorded a 13-save shutout to lead Oakville to its fourth straight victory in Provincial Women's Hockey League play. The Hornets started even quicker the previous night at Joshua's Creek, as Maltais scored 12 seconds into their contest against the Kitchener-Waterloo Rangers. Maltais added another marker in the second period and Daniela Paniccia made 20 saves for the shutout as Oakville prevailed 2-0. Forward Zach Gallant and defencemen Ian Blacker and Evan Bouchard were among the 66 players selected by Hockey Canada last week. The three local residents will each eventually be named to one of three teams -- Canada Black, Canada Red and Canada White -- that will compete in the six-country, eight-team tournament. Gallant was the fifth-overall pick in this year's Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection by the Peterborough Petes. The centre has three assists in 10 games this season for Peterborough. Bouchard, claimed 17th overall in the OHL draft by the London Knights, has one assist in four games with the Knights this year. Some scouts considered him to be one of the top offensive defencemen in this year's OHL draft class. Blacker is a rookie with the Ontario Junior Hockey League's Oakville Blades, with whom he's collected one assist and 28 penalty minutes in 15 contests. Blacker was also drafted this year by the Knights, but had already verbally committed to Western Michigan University. The World Under-17 Hockey Challenge brings together the top players in the world born in 1999 or later. Since the first World Under-17 Hockey Challenge (then known as the Quebec Esso Cup) in 1986, more than 1,500 NHL draft picks have played in the tournament, including 12 of the past 15 first-overall selections. The three Canadian teams will be joined by the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden and the United States, forming two groups of four teams. All eight teams will qualify for the quarter-finals, with winners advancing to the semis. The tournament will officially begin Nov. 1.
