The transportation phenomenon that rocked the 70s and 80s is sweeping the roads o f Oakville with a trendier, more powerful style. "The traditional moped was a bicy cle with an engine," remarks Ryan Driscoll, owner o f Mr. Moped, which recently opened on Speers Rd. "These are fully automatic, with 2-speed transmission...This is a high-end quality unit - you can drive these things forever." Mopeds have evolved over a period o f 47 years, says Driscoll, resulting in a high-efficiency, low-maintenance vehi cle that fits into everyone's budget. "It's a very affordable way of trans portation," says Driscoll, who original ly switched from the car industry to mopeds because o f high fuel prices. A top provincial salesperson for Chrysler, Driscoll left his job at the head office to provide Canadians with "a fun and eco nomical way of getting around town." Economical may be an understate ment. At 210 km to the gallon, and $3$4 of fuel ("the cheaper, the better") to fill up the tank, moped owners breeze by gas prices. The mini-motorcycles sport 49 cc engines, but are also fully operational as bicycles, and don't require any special licensing. "There's no motorcycle license required," says Driscoll, adding that the only requirement is a 20 minute written test at the Ministry of Transportation. Synthetic oil, adds Driscoll, makes these bikes "very easy on the environ ment." Prices range from $2399 for smaller models to $2699 for larger models. Mr. Moped imports its TOMOS mopeds from Slovenia, and its D.O.T. safetyapproved gear from Italy. The bikes come in a variety of colours. The shop also offers repair services, but, Driscoll adds, "the bikes are so basic, very little can go wrong."
