The foundation was founded in 1994 and since has supported many projects to benefit the com m unity from health care, com m unity developm ent and arts, to social services, her itage and the environm ent -- including youth. The volunteer-based and donor-driven CFO m anages charity funds and awards the interest earned, as grants to local agencies. Now it's about to raise the ante in providing for youths. A highlight of the C FO 's first, public, annu al general m eeting, held at town hall Thursday, was its new Investing In O ur O akville Youth cam paign. The CFO aim s to raise $250,000 by M arch 2002, which w ill then be m atched by the Ontario governm ent to establish a $500,000 youth eiidowment fund. It will support opportunities for youths in sports, leadership, cam ping, education, arts and cultural program s. "We have $140,000 to date and we have less than 10 months to raise the rest," advised CFO executive director Mary Ellen Frederick. Helping out with the fundraising is the O ptim ist Club o f Oakville, which will collect loonies and twoonies with its Loonie Mile fundraiser. Donors will tape coins on a milelong tape that will be making the rounds of local events including the W aterfront Festival, M idnight M adness, Jazz F estival, Fall Festival, and more. O n-hand T hursday to testify about the rew ards o f investing in young people was Ron Shantz director o f Prince Charles Place and the Kerr Street M inistries. The m inistries began in 1996 as an outreach program o f the Chartwell Baptist C hurch's 1994 non-profit housing project. Then the m inistries drew in 15 youths. Today, it's supported by all o f O akville's Christian churches and will attract 200 youths to its weekday day cam p and its new camp pro gram for teens. "At the Kerr Street day camp my kids found friendship, nurturing, leadership and religion and it allowed me to work on a full-tim e basis to provide for my children," said Oakville resM arie ident Rizzuto. R izzuto was also on-hand T hursday to talk about the benefits o f the Kerr S treet M inistries where her daughter still attends and her Ron Shantz: Kerr Street son is a counsellor. With involvem ent from those across town, including visits from the m ayor, H alton Regional Police, and the CFO, the Kerr Street M inistries is a success story, said Shantz. "The police have told us that K err Street has changed dram atically. It's the low est crime area in all o f H alton," said Shantz, noting it also boasts 29 nationalities and 10,000 people in a small area. "You give because it's the right thing to do and you do it so w ell," M ayor Ann M ulvale, a CFO founder and fam ily fund contributor, told CFO m embers. "A child is form ed with the nurturing they receive before the age o f five. For every dol lar invested, there's a $5 return. For every dol lar not invested, you spend $5," said the mayor. There are more than 100 com m unity foun dations in Canada, which hold $1.6 billion in assets and dole out more than $75 m illion in grants annually. The CFO has $6 m illion in assets, which makes it am ong the top 25 in the country. Last year, the CFO gained $2 m illion in assets from new fam ily and corporate funds, its m arathon g o lf tourney, and the G reat Dream Home Lottery. Its upcom ing 7th G reat D ream Home Lottery will kick o ff in Septem ber 2001. M eanw hile, last year the CFO gave out $800,000 in grants for local projects.
