Gretzky will speak at the end of the Gala, which begins at 8 p.m., and will share his experi ence as a stroke survivor following a stroke in 1991, and talk about his life, his family and his role as a spokesperson for the Foundation. Gretzky says: "I am so grateful to have had a second change of life! Every second of every day is important to me and I only hope that if telling my story can help even one person, then all of this will be worth it. And remember, there is life after stroke - look at me!" Las Vegas-bound musical impressionist Chris Kennedy is headlining the Gala with magician Dick Joiner and comedian Glenn Ottoway. Gala tickets, $25 each, are still available at the Oakville Centre Box Office on 905-815-2021. This Gala is the culmination of a day of fundraising for the fight against the deadly and debilitating disease of stroke. All revenue raised is used by the Foundation to fund research into the prevention and treatment of stroke. The 30-seater Big Bike for Stroke will be seen around Downtown Oakville throughout the day on Saturday powered by 16 teams of riders from local companies and clubs. Last year's event was a tremendous success raising $77,000 and this year's target is $100,000. "This year we are holding our first ever Gala evening to allow the Big Bike for Stroke teams to be recognized together for their fine efforts earli er in the day as well as invite the public to partic ipate" says Paul Sneddon, event chair. "We are delighted that Walter Gretzky will be acknowledging the teams and sponsors as well as accepting the funds raised on behalf of the Foundation." Continued Sneddon, "we have 16 teams reg istered and riding from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. and they are a cross sec tion of the communi tyM ayor M ulvale and Town Crier open the event a.m. The Heart Stroke Foundation of Ontario's Big Bike for Stroke event fea tures a 30-seater bicycle which travels to large and small communities throughout Ontario to raise funds for research that fights Walter Gretzky the debilitating and deadly disease of stroke. Each 29-person team rides a course that covers about three kilometers within their communities and raises pledges from family and co-workers. The course, which is in Downtown Oakville, will start and finish at the Queen's Head pub on the comer of Dunn and Church Streets. Participants will ride a circular route on Dunn, Randall, Navy, and Robinson Streets, twice to complete three kilometres. Each trip will be escorted by police. The team schedule is as follows: CIBC, 9 a.m.; Nazar Family Chiropractic, 9:30 a.m.; KopriVa Taylor Funeral Home, 10 a.m.; The Oakville Club, 10:30 a.m.; The American Women's Club, 11 a.m.; Queen's Head Regulars, 11:30 a.m. Following a one-hour lunch break, the Big Bike event continues with Bronte Bucaneers, 1 p.m.; The Slice Girls, 1:30 p.m.; The Divot Diggers, 2 p.m.; Alfield Soccer, 2:30 p.m.; Lads Soccer, 3 p.m.; Budd's Imported Cars, 3:30 p.m.; Rotary West, 4 p.m.; Olde Oakvillians, 4:30 p.m., and Team Sanctuary, 5 p.m. Ride times may be subject to change.
