A4 T H E O A K V IL L E B E A V E R Wednesday July 18 , 2001 Report scores facilities above the three-star average (C ontinued from page A1) overall perception o f their hospital stay," said Oliver, who helped pass out cake on Monday to staff members and the public as a token of apprecia tion. "It also takes into account w hether they would return and whether they would recommend the hospital." HHS finished behind the Hospital for Sick Children (five stars overall) and tied with M arkham Stouffville Hospital with four stars. For each hospital, the report looked four areas of their perfor mance: patient satisfaction, clinical utilization and outcomes, financial performance and condition, system integration and change. Rather than give each facility one overall score in each area, a total o f 39 various indi cators were assessed. W hile H H S' results vary, Oliver says the report card when taken as a whole is very encouraging. "We are extrem ely proud of our overall opinion score," he said. "Patient satisfaction is first and fore most. To me, that's the most impor tant one." HHS scored above the three-star average in seven indicators, including asthm a re-adm ission (five stars), cholecystectomy com plications (five stars) and strategies for alternate level of care patients (five stars) plus the collection, dissem ination and use of clinical data (five stars). The lone category in which HHS received only two stars was Nursing C are H ours, w hich reflects the amount o f inpatient time spent on direct patient care as a percent of total inpatient nursing hours. This includes everything from nursing management Program based on relationships (C ontinued from page A1) "M ore agencies are adopting the in school mentoring program and have found it to be a great success," said Lawson. "It's the fastest growing men toring program across Canada. The Big Brothers and Sisters of Canada have offered the program across Canada for the past five years, but it's not yet avail able in Ontario. "This mentoring program won't be tutor based, but a friendship and rela tionship based program," continued Lawson. ' Children accepted into the program will be identified and referred by their schools. The children and volunteers will be matched according to shared interests. "The children (in the program) will not necessarily come from single-parent homes," continued Lawson. "Although Big Brothers and Big Sisters organizations are identified as working with single-parent homes, the children accepted into the In-School Mentoring Program will be those selected by their teachers as being to benefit from the friendship of an adult, to boost the child's self esteem. `Teachers have long been advocates of a child's self-esteem," said Gary Sadler, a superintendent with the Halton District School Board. "It's important that kids have signif icant supportive adults in their life." A similar program which offered in schools, called Friends, was discontin ued two years ago, added Sadler. The In-School Mentoring Program will be piloted at Oakwood and St. James in Oakville, King's Road in Burlington, Holy Rosary in Milton, and St. Joseph's in Acton. The In-School Mentoring Program will be partially funded by the United Way of Oakville and the Halton Healthy Community Fund. Once HHS administration wades through the detailed technical report, says Oliver, one priority will be to seek ways to improve nursing time spent on the front lines. Because there exist no accepted targets or standards to rate each indi cator, every hospital's performance is compared instead to its peers across Ontario. Due to the many variables involved, statistical factors are employed to adjust each scorecard. As a result, the results are seen as an initial tool in a quality assessment process which requires more detailed analysis. "In the days and weeks to come we will be reviewing the technical report and the indicators to ensure we have an understanding of all our scores," said Oliver. "These results are posi tive and encouraging and perhaps more importantly, they provide us with valuable information which will help us enhance patient care and direct quality improvements." Oliver explained that the technical report contains a wealth of data bro ken down hospital by hospital and unit by unit that will be thoroughly examined by staff. "We will take the time to improve and get even better," he said. HHS was one o f 121 Ontario acute care organizations, representing 185 hospital sites, w hich voluntarily agreed to participate in Hospital Report 2001.
