C E L E B R A T I N G Y O U N G M U S I C I A N S Oakville Choral Society kicks off holidays The Oakville Choral Society is inviting the community to celebrate the festive season with its Christmas concerts, kicking off tomorrow (Friday). The musical events will feature Vivaldi's Gloria and music by Bach, Mendelssohn and Handel. A selection of well-known, sing-along Christmas carols will end the evening. The concerts will spotlight the local choir of 60 voices and guest soloists, along with a chamber orchestra. Hannah Warby, 12, Parker Woodman and Maija Smith, both 11, and Yasmina Granic, 10, were part of Team Canada and went to Reisa, Germany from Nov. 23-28 to compete in what is largely described as "the Olympics of dance." Show Dance is a high-calibre jazz type of dance that tells a story. The International Dance Organization, which organizes the competition, is a world federation with a membership of 90 nations representing more than 250,000 dancers from six continents. Participants compete to earn gold, silver and bronze designations. All members of Team Canada Dance had to audition for a spot. The team choreographer was Oakville's Allain Lupien, Canadian Dance Company owner who also plays Lucien on TV's The Next Step. The international dance competition features more than 250,000 member dancers from six continents. "It is also great to see the best of the best in Canada that come from various studios all working together as one team with one goal, and that is to represent Canada," said Team Canada Dance national director Bonnie Dyer. "Canada has been quite successful in all dance disciplines at the world championships and this is mainly due to the high standard of training that local studios offer." Team Canada returned with two gold medals, three silver and three bronze. Yasmina took home the gold medal in children's small group, silver for the children's solo category , and bronze in children's duet. The youngster, along with Parker and Maija, won the gold medal in children's large group, while Hannah took home bronze in the junior large group category.
