At halftime, the Oakville Blue Devils coach removed winger Tyler Wason, who had scored twice in Oakville's previous game, and replaced him with defensive midfielder Chris Mitchell. Not only did Mitchell solidify Oakville's central area, allowing the Blue Devils' offence to get more aggressive, he also provided arguably the biggest goal of Oakville's season. Mitchell's 55th-minute goal Saturday in Quebec gave the Blue Devils a 4-3 aggregate lead over the CS MontRoyal Outremont Griffins in the twogame series between the League1 Ontario and Premier Ligue de Soccer du Quebec champions. Anthony Novak added an insurance marker in the 85th minute as Oakville tied the game 2-2 to claim the Division 3 men's soccer title 5-3 on aggregate. "It was a bit of a gamble to put in a defensive mid at that point," said Wilde, "but it worked out and the coaches will certainly take some of the credit." Oakville won the opening leg of the Inter-Provincial Cup, claiming a 3-1 decision Nov. 1 in Vaughan. However, the Griffons erased that aggregate advantage with two goals in the first 35 minutes Saturday. Had Mont-Royal's 2-0 lead Saturday held up, the Griffons would have been awarded the aggregate victory on away goals. "We had said we wouldn't sit back and defend, and we didn't," said Wilde. "We always knew we would need the away goal and after Chris got it, we thought we might even get a few more. I think Mitchell was the player of the game, and probably in both legs of the Cup." The Blue Devils posted a record of 17 wins, two draws and three losses to easily win the League1 Ontario championship in their inaugural season, finishing six points ahead of the 15-2-5 Woodbridge Strikers. Webb came back to defeat the Georgetown Rebels 25-23 in the second set, then claimed the third game 15-12 to win the best-of-three Halton junior boys' volleyball Tier 1 final Monday at Sheridan College. That coach happened to be Onate's mother, Carol, who doesn't teach at Webb but agreed to oversee the team when asked by the school this past summer. "They played so... composed is the word. They played with pride. They believe in each other," Carol beamed after the game. "If we struggle (with individual plays such as serves or bumps), that gets me a little worried," she added. "But I could see the connection I still had with them. I would give them signs that I believed in them and to go for it. I think they knew nothing was stopping them if they wanted it." After dropping the opening set 25-20, Webb scored the first point of the second game, then surrendered 12 consecutive points. Following a timeout, the Chargers went on an 8-1 run of their own to get back into the game, and later scored the final five points of the set to prevail 25-23. Webb maintained a lead throughout most of the third game, though never by more than three points. "I told everyone (before the third set), `This is our game. We are playing not for ourselves, but for each other. We are playing for our school,'" said Calvin Onate. "As soon as the ball hit the ground (on the winning point) and the scoreboard went to 15, I knew it was Garth Webb, Tier 1 Halton champions. Having finished first in the Halton senior boys' volleyball league with an 11-1 record, there was rarely a need. But the Raiders showed they were more than capable of putting up a fight when necessary. Aquinas twice rallied from a set down in Monday's Halton Tier 1 final against Georgetown's Christ the King Jaguars to force a fifth set. "You just have to stay positive, stay relaxed," said Chargers captain Calvin Onate, who delivered the championship-clinching point with a well-placed kill between two Rebels defenders. "I think we can give some credit to our coach. When times were tough, she would call a timeout and get us back in it. She was stern, but she wasn't yelling at us. She said, `Teams (come back from) this all the time, why is our team any different?' It was inspirational for all of us."
