Wednesday, August 15, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D7 TWo-time Ontario Cup champs continue domination in Ottawa The Oakville Angels U-16 rep team already have two Ontario Cup champi onships on their resume, and earlier this month they added another notable achievement. It is tough to repeat or three-peat as champions at any level in any sport and the Angels have set a standard that will likely remain for some time as they captured their fifth consecutive cham pionship at the prestigious Sunoco National Capital Invitational Girls Soccer Tournament in Ottawa. Over this five-year span, the Angels have posted a perfect record of 30-0-0. Besides having to win six games to bring home the hardware, the games are usually played in intense heat and this, year's tournament was no excep tion. But the Angels helped themselves out great by jumping on their opposi tion early in virtually every game to set their opponents on their heels. Oakville scored an emphatic 4-0 win in the championship game over fel low OYSL rival Scarborough Storm who, like Oakville, had also reeled off five straight tourney wins, outscoring their opponents 32-1 in the process. The game was played at the OZ Dome Field, a full sized, beautifully manicured field that is home to the Ottawa Wizards m en's pro team. Oakville were able to use their skill, along with the size of the field, to dom inate Scarborough, outshooting them 16-7, and holding a 3-0 edge at the half. For Kristine Snedden, it was her fourth shutout of the tournament. Goals were scored by Kara Lang (2), Candace Nzeakor and Silvi Noolandi. Assists went to Anne Friedland (3), Courtney Cherrett (2), Nzeakor (2) and Lauren Glover. Midfielder Anne Friedland, for the second consecutive year, picked up the final game MVP award. The tournament demonstrated the teamwork that has been the Angels' trademark to date in the 2001 season as every player picked up a scoring point and contributed to the championship. The semifinal game was another OYSL showdown, with Oakville, play ing less than two hours after complet ing their final round robin game, dou bling North Mississauga 4-2. The Angels came out flying in the second half, scoring three straight goals, the first two by Candace Nzeakor and the final insurance marker by Courtney Cherrett. Exhibition win over Ontario team bound for Canada Games Oakville boasts the biggest soccer club in Canada with well over 8,000 members. Besides quantity, however, the club has also proven to be well endowed with quality. A case in point was a recent exhibi tion match, in which the Oakville Storm U-18 squad -- which is part of the club's new academic/athletic devel opment program -- defeated Ontario's Canada Games U-20 squad 2-1. It was almost like an inter-squad game, what with the provincial team boasting no less than six Oakville play ers, including four from the Storm U18 (Anne Ogundele, Robin Gayle, Diana Mathieson and Tanya Dennis), one from the U-20 Oakville team (Emily Stevens) and one from the U-16 Oakville Angels (Kara Lang). Emily Stevens opened the scoring for Ontario on a penalty shot which stood up until the break. Ten minutes into the second half, the Oakville Storm evened up as Kanisha Campbell drew out Ontario goalie Anne Ogundele (who is usually her teammate with the Storm) before putting it behind her. Oakville then began to take hold of the game and Jaclyn Singer slammed a power shot behind the keeper for the 21 final count. "Special mention should be given to goalie Holly Nixon, closely followed by Lauren Massey, Kanisha Campbell, Keisha Myers and Lyndsay Zeller," said Billy McKenna, who is coach/director of the Oakville Soccer Club's academic/athletic development program. On a course set by interna tional course designer Pierre Jolicoeur, and featuring 31 rid ers representing Canada, the U.S., Colum bia, France and Belgium, only four of the con testants were able to jum p clean and advance to the jum p off. It was won by Jill Henselwood, aboard her mount Toyz R Us in a time of 45.76 seconds followed by 25-yearold M ilton resident Ainsley Vince, riding Kafka in a time of 46.10 seconds. Finishing in third and fourth, respectively, were veteran show jum per and current mem ber of the Canadian Equestrian team, Mac Cone, aboard Co Cu, and `Captain Canada' Ian Millar, aboard Dorincord.
