The seven-member civilian board, that oversees the Halton Regional Police Service, voted Thursday morning to elect its chair and vice-chair for the year. Milton Mayor Gord Krantz presided over the ceremony. The meeting also saw registered nurse Marion Yee re-elected to her role as vice chair for 2016. This will be Burton's third term as chair and Yee's second term as vice chair. Burton has served on the police services board since 2010 and was first elected chair in 2014. He is in his third term as Oakville's mayor following his re-election to the position in 2014. These include the Oakville and Halton Natural Heritage Systems, the Town Energy Management Plan, the Health Protection Air Quality By-law, the Emerald Ash Borer Management Program and the new Official Plans -- Livable Oakville and Sustainable Halton. "I was delighted to be returned as chair. I think the board has a lot of very important work ahead of us. In the Province of Ontario, this is a year where the government is going to be bringing forward changes to the Police Act for the first time in more than 25 years," said Burton. "This is a very important year to be among the leadership of those concerned about civilian control of police and I am glad to be there." Meanwhile, Yee was first appointed to the board by the Province in 2010 and has served as its vice chair since the start of 2015. She is a registered nurse, with many years of management experience in the health care field. Yee received her nursing education at Mohawk Collage and degrees in Urban Planning from Ryerson University and University of Western Ontario. The Burlington resident is widely involved in a variety of community activities. She has been a mediator and trainer for Scarborough Conflict Resolution Service and volunteered for the Society of Conflict Resolution in Ontario Speaker and Trade Fairs. "I'm thrilled to have this vote of confidence of all the members of the board," she said. "I'm honoured to do this and, as Mayor Burton said, there is a lot of work ahead of us. It is very interesting times with the upcoming changes. I am looking forward to working with everybody." Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner said he is looking forward to working with the board in future.
