Removing exclusivity is key to success for breakfast program continued from p.10 "One of the big things in our high school and what makes it successful is we don't just allow students in financial need to access it, you allow everyone and make it available to everyone," she said. "If it's exclusive, there's stigma associated with it." The program is also in a communal space, where coordinators, staff and students all sit and eat with one another, added Bailey, who first got involved in Blakelock's breakfast program because of a "life-changing" trip she took to Kenya where she saw children attending school with barely any food all day. Students are served by student volunteers, who help create a more welcoming atmosphere, she added. Scott said nutrition programs rely heavily on volunteers to be successful. There's cooking, serving and shopping for food that needs to happen to have a program run smoothly. "If you ever want to give back to a program within your community, reach out to a school and see if they have a breakfast program and see if they need help," she said. Scott added another way to help your nutrition programs in your community is by making a $2 donation the next time you're in the grocery checkout line.
