www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, February 19, 2016 | 16 Oakville's Molly Burke shares story of overcoming bullying in Toronto Feb. 24 Oakville resident Molly Burke's world darkened at a young age. At just four years old, she was diagnosed with retinitis pigments, an eye disease that causes vision loss. The White Oaks Secondary School graduate will be at the CNIB Centre in Toronto on Feb. 24 at a private event to speak about the challenges she's had to overcome over the years. As a motivational speaker, Burke will share her experience of being bullied and how she dealt with depression and anxiety with a group of Grades 5-8 students, some of whom are also blind or partially sighted. Part of Pink Shirt Day The speaking engagement is part of Pink Shirt Day, which raises the important issue of bullying in schools, homes and over the internet. It will be followed by an interactive, largescale tactile mural project led by artist Sandro Parisotto. Burke has been speaking publicly since she was five years old as an ambassador for The Foundation Fighting Blindness Canada. The Toronto-based foundation supports research for and public awareness of retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, and related retinal eye diseases. Burke has shared a stage with some notable names, including singer Demi Lovato, actor Martin Sheen, retired basketball player Magic Johnson and activists Martin Luther King III, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Malala Yousafzai and the Kielburger brothers. CNIB is a registered charity that provides community-based support, knowledge and a national voice to ensure Canadians who are blind or partially sighted have the confidence, skills and opportunities to fully participate in life, according to a media release.
