T he name Sandra was incorrectly spelled as Santa. We apologize for any inconvenience this error may have caused. ast week, we outlined some of the incredible products and services that we have been able to gather for this year's Oakville Rotary Auction thanks to the generosity of the many local merchants and businesses who have donated them. However, the wonderful items you are successful in bid ding on are really only part of what the Auction - to air November 23 and 24 on Cogeco 23 - is all about. The Rotary Clubs of Oakville West, Oakville North and Oakville Trafalgar have been working for the community for decades, and are dependent upon the success of fundraising events like the Auction. Often, their efforts are behind the scenes and relatively unknown to all except those directly involved with the projects. We thought we would bring you up to date on just some of the great things the Clubs are doing in our local communities. Ian Anderson House has been a project of Oakville West for a few years. The House, which provides a comfortable, homey setting for terminally ill cancer patients who have left hospital, has received donations that enable them to buy beds. The House, located at Winston Churchill and Lakeshore, is such a meaningful project that four Burlington Rotary- clubs are try- O a k v ille Rotary A u c t i o n ing to build a similar one in their own community. Both Oakville West and Oakville Trafalgar have so far committed to donate thousands of dollars a year for the next few years to the new YMCA facility being built on Rebecca Street. Both Clubs are pleased that the YMCA reaches beyond just youth in our community to help adults and seniors as well. Oakville Trafalgar's donation will go towards the establish ment of a parenting centre in the new building. Dreams Take Flight is anoth er source of pride for all three Clubs. Each May, a Rotarian accompanies four physically challenged children from local homes on a one-day adventure to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Last May it was a Rotarian from Oakville Trafalgar; the year before, it was Oakville West. The group meets at the air port at 5 a.m. on the appointed day, and joins hundreds of other children to fly south via Air Canada to spend the day fulfill ing many dreams. Oakville Trafalgar has been supporting the efforts of Halton Women's Place for years, help ing women and children move into new homes that have been freshly decorated and furnished. The Club also recently voted to provide substantial financial assistance over the next few years to HW P's capital cam paign to build a new facility in our community. A big project for Oakville North has been `The Club', an after-school tutoring initiative with Big Sisters. Offered to boys and girls in Grades 3 to 8 who need some help with their stud ies, the students are paired with high school students and adult volunteers from our community. So far, the project encompasses two local schools but plans are to grow it to include as many schools as are needed. Of course, much of this good work relies on the success of events like the Oakville Rotary Auction. We are grateful for the sup port of our Auction corporate sponsors: J. Lockwood Chrysler, TD Canada Trust, Speers Road Broadloom, National Wireless, Roblar Enterprises, The Oakville Beaver and Cogeco. - Subm itted by Jennifer Kay , a m em ber o f the Rotary Club o f O akville Trafalgar, who handles m arketing and prom otions fo r the auction.
