B 6 - The Oakville Beaver, W e d n e s d a y N o v e m b e r 28, 2001 Christmas: the season for taking it over the top By Nancy Alexander SP E C IA L TO TH E BEA V ER If you're looking for inspiration to give your home some real sparkle and impact this Christmas, look no further than the showroom s o f Ennisclare Interiors. Every year, Ennisclare pulls out all the stops to create an opulent Christmas wonderland throughout its store. W hether your personal style is tradi tional red and green or you're inclined toward something more sophisticated and neutral, there are items around every com er to round out your holiday T h e Oa k v ille B eaver M y name is Alex Banfield. I'm in grade 8 at Falgarwood School. This is my first year delivering the Oakville Beaver. M y route is great because it's in my own neighbourhood and I know most o f the people. Having the extra spending money and being able to save up for the Nintendo Game Cube makes even rainy days worth the effort to get out there on time. I would like to be a pilot in the future. Darren Lazarenko, Ennisclare's in store display designer, starts months in advance to prepare the store for the hol iday season. Lazarenko is a firm believer that Christmas is the perfect time to go all out with your decorating. If there was ever an excuse to go over the top, this is it. "It's a way of life these days to try to make everything easier. We often don't want to put a lot of effort into things," he told the Beaver. "But at Christmas, you really need to go for it." Lazarenko doesn't seem to be alone in his thinking. For the second year in a row, there has been a huge response to a series of Christmas decorating work shops offered by Ennisclare. In fact, this year, the number expanded from three to six. Each evening, Lazarenko selected a different theme to create his elaborate "tablescapes" which go way beyond the basic centrepiece. Using almost the full length of a din ingroom table, Lazarenko combines greenery, candles, ribbons, baubles and collectibles to create a major design statement. "Obviously, you wouldn't set it up this way for Christmas dinner. There wouldn't be room for food," he says. "But this is the time to really do up the table. Bring out all your china and sil ver and crystal. Make use o f all the items you cher ish. And while you're at it, don't forget Barrie Erskine · Oakville Beaver Darren Lazarenko and Dorothy Gregory o f Ennisclare Interiors: Christmas no time for minimalist approach. the dining chairs, buffet and chandelier. Lazarenko uses bows, tassels, throws and beaded pillows to layer on the opu lence throughout the diningroom. Elsewhere in the home, he suggests bringing out cherished collectibles and outfitting them for the season. How about taking your great-grandmother's china bowl and filling it with coloured balls to add sparkle to a cocktail or sofa table? Lazarenko suggests starting with a colour scheme you love and then adding a few pieces to it each year rather than buying "sets" of ornaments that all look the same. On his own tree (he usually has two) there are ornaments that have been with him since childhood which add special meaning to the season. As for knowing when you've got enough, Lazarenko says his personal rule o f thumb is when you think the tree looks finished, add another hundred ornaments. Like the man says, Christmas is not the tim e for the m inim alist approach.
