That's because they are being held right in our backyard at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Jan. 8-12. The Oakville Skating Club members earned a gold medal in junior dance at this past w eekend's central Ontario championships in M ississauga and earned a bye right into the nationals. Dance seems to be a real strength for the local skating club, at this time, as no less than three other pairs also hit the podium in their respective sectional championships -- each earning silver. In their case, they advance to the east ern Canadian divisionals which will be held in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Dec. 6-9. The top skaters from this event advance to the junior nationals which well be held in St. John's, Newfoundland, Jan. 23-26 (the junior nationals were sep arated from the senior nationals last sea son). With the whole team stepping up and putting in a great effort, the Oakville Blades had a hot weekend beating Georgetown Raiders 7-5 on Saturday and Mississauga Chargers 4-3 on Friday in provincial Jr. A hockey action. In Saturday's 7-5 win in Georgetown, the Blades took control of the game by firing four straight goals to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead. The Blades probably could have managed a bigger winning margin, had they not spent as much time as they did in the penalty box, mainly in the second period. Although their penalty killing was good. `There were good sections of the game tonight, but it wasn't a complete game," said coach Anderson. "We were killing penalties a lot in the second period." In Friday night's 4-3 win over visiting Mississauga, the Blades took control of the game with three straight goals to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead. Mississauga then kept the fans glued to their seats with a late goal. A shake up of lines in this game sparked some offence from an unlikely source.
