Dr. Danny Sapir, Medical Director of OTM H's Renal Dialysis Program, explained that "hemodialysis" is a mechanical method of cleansing wastes from the blood of people with end stage renal failure, who have not had a kidney transplant. During an average treatment - which takes three and a half to four hours blood flows from a patient to a dialysis membrane which cleans the blood then returns it to the patient. This is done 20 times per session and involves a total of 96 litres of blood. The cost is approxi mately $35,000 per patient. "Peritoneal dialysis" (currently not available at OTMH) is another form of treatment, which rids the body of harm ful wastes and water which works simi larly to hemodialysis. Arrangement are made for local patients who choose this form of treatment at appropriate health centres. The OTMH unit's 24 dialysis stations and pair of isolation stations are now operating six days a week, three shifts a day and can treat up to 144 patients. As of September, there were 2,557 on hemodialysis and 809 patients on peri toneal dialysis in the Toronto Region. The W omen's Diagnostic Centre brings together mammography, bone densinometry and ultrasound under one roof. A bone densinometer offers a noninvasive way to measure bone mineral content and the density of specific bone size, such as the hip and spine, which are most prone to fracture because of osteo porosis and other degenerative diseases. The Centre features one bone densinom etry system. Mammography involves a low-dose breast x-ray to find lumps that are too small to be felt and to help physicians determine if a lump in the breast is a gland, a harmless cyst or a tumour. Two such machines are included in the Centre. Ultrasound produces viewing images of soft tissues, such as those of the abdomen and pelvis. It also serves to pin point for doctors the exact location of organs for treatment or suigery. Six ultra sound units are located in the Centre. Approximately 80 ultrasounds are performed in the Centre each day, as well as 50 mammograms and bone densinom etry tests. The Centre is also home to other state-of-the-art equipment, such as the stereostatic core biopsy unit in the mam mography area. Only $43,000 left in reserve fund after Board retirement gratuities paid The Halton District School Board has dipped into most of its reserve fund to offset a major revenue shortfall for the recently completed fiscal year. Trustees voted at last week's board meeting to approve a four-point adminis trative plan that will enable the board to wipe out a $2.2-million operating budget deficit for the 2000-01 school year. This move leaves the board's reserve fund with just $43,728. In addition to agreeing to access $1.7 million in working fund reserves, trustees rescinded two board motions from earlier this year relating to renovations to Iroquois Ridge High School in Oakville. The project will proceed but the $233,166 in funds allocated for it were put back in the reserve fund for deficit reduction. The cost o f the Iroquois Ridge project will be transferred to the capital fund, to be offset by lease pay ments. The $2.2-million net over-expen diture of the board's estimated $279.7million budget for last year prompted discussion about the main cause - the unexpected $6-million cost of retire ment gratuities. Business superintendent Carla Kisko noted more than 150 teachers retired last year and comprised the majority of the retirement gratuity cost, which is the full responsibility of the board. Gratuities are part of teachers' negotiated agree ments and have been offered at the Halton board for at least 30 years. They constitute a lump-sum payment upon retirement. Most full-time employees of the board, including principals, viceprincipals and administrative personnel, are entitled to retirement gratuities. The payout is calculated by taking the num ber of sick days an eligible employee has saved over their career and deter mining the value up to 50 per cent of their final year's salary. A teacher gets 20 sick days over 10 months. Those unused are banked and carried over to the next school year. The average payout would be in the $30,000 range for a long-time teacher. The Halton board does not pay retire ment gratuities to its new elementary teachers anymore. Instead, it makes a one-time RRSP contribution of $2,200 to the teacher. Burlington trustee Mike Ellis, attend ing the meeting via teleconference, was the only one of eight trustees to vote no to all o f staff's recommendations.
