Next Thursday (April 14), the not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing environmental films to the region will hold two screenings of the documentary at Film.Ca Cinemas, 171 Speers Rd., unit 25. According to the TIFF website, the film details the story of a young salesman who, after discovering the effects of the infant formula he's selling, challenges the system and "the powers that be, in this based-on-fact drama," directed by Academy Award-winning director Danis Tanovic. "We are thrilled to have Syed Aamir Raza himself as our guest speaker for the evening," said Heather Govender, Halton Green Screens program co-ordinator. "He is one of the bravest people I have had the pleasure of meeting, and we cannot wait to help him share his story with our local public." The Oakville screening starts at 7 p.m., followed by a discussion/activity. The second screening starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $5 for adults and $2 students, with a small number reserved to be sold at the door. "Our main goals are to raise awareness and help people feel empowered to make a difference. Many individuals making small changes can amount to large scale, systemic change," said Govender. Put on by the non-profit Oakville Festivals of Film and Art (OFFA), this year's event kicks off at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts on June 24. Created by longtime resident Wendy Donnan (OFFA executive director) and local photographer Judah Hernandez (OFFA artistic director), the festival brings Canadian and world premieres and screenings to Oakville. This year will be its third rendition. "Willson Oakville Film Festival is very excited to be able to bring Oakville quality Canadian and international films that will be screening from Friday, June 24 to Sunday, June 26 in theatres in both Oakville's downtown and Kerr Village," said Donnan.
