Probably not, so why are we doing this to children when they are at their most vulnerable and the future of our society? The most concerning issue with this announcement is the government is not recognizing therapies outside of the traditional and outdated Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI) and Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) therapies. So many advances have been made in ASD, none of them reflected in the proposed change from the Ontario government. Would you cut wait times for cancer patients to receive chemotherapy when so many breakthrough cancer drugs exist? Probably not. That would be considered unethical. Why don't the same rules apply in autism? These are our children, our future. There's a world of more recent, innovative, practical therapies for autistic people that have credible research and data to back up each approach ­ so why are we still hooked on IBI? No one ever seems to speak about naturalistic approaches such as Pivotal Response Therapy (PRT) and Early Start Denver Model (ESDM). Is the government living in the Stone Age, is it not aware these therapies exist? They should be considered in future. Needless to say, certified therapists are few and far between, and the allocation of $8,000 for children over the age of five years is a real joke -- actually it's insulting. It's the government's way of making the burden fall on the parents, are we not burdened enough, do we not pay our taxes, aren't our children already paying the price enough as it is, is this not a health issue, do we not have a socialist health system? What the Ontario Government should be aiming for is an inclusive system where family physicians know how and when to refer a child to the proper specialist in order to be diagnosed -- early diagnosis is key. Information sessions that provide all the steps to follow for the best outcome for each child. Also, therapies are costly. Behavioural therapists are not covered by any private insurance. Therefore, parents must turn to private therapy ­ must pay out of pocket. No refunds. No help. The government needs to step up and listen to the families who live this every day.
