Oakvillians rally for those in need in Fort McMurray by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 19 | Thursday, May 12, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com All across Oakville, people are mobilizing to help those affected by the wildfires in Fort McMurray. On Tuesday (May 10), Oakville-based Ford Motor Company of Canada and its Canadian Ford Dealers donated more than $500,000 to the Canadian Red Cross for relief efforts. "It is inspiring to see the people of Alberta, and the rest of Canada, come together and support those who have been displaced by the severe wildfires in Fort McMurray and surrounding areas," said Dianne Craig, the president and CEO of Ford of Canada in a press release. "I am also proud of our Canadian Ford and Lincoln Dealers for uniting to help evacuees and local charities, including the Canadian Red Cross. Our thoughts are with those affected during this difficult time." Other local efforts included a May 10 Portrait Masterclass Fundraiser for Fort McMurray at Aroma Café in downtown Oakville, hosted by Oakville artist Anna Edwards and an impromptu charity barbecue event on May 8 in Palermo hosted by the Javed family. The Javed family said in a matter of a few hours, their family members gathered food, prepared information boards and asked the Oakville Fire Department for support. "The event was a success; so many people stopped by, appreciated our efforts and made our belief even stronger that we, the Canadians, always stand on guard for thee," Kashif Javed wrote in an email to the Oakville Beaver. Javed said area residents helped raised $813 for the Canadian Red Cross in two hours. He thanked his neighbours and the local firefighters, who brought their truck and helped attract attention to the barbecue. Residents looking for other ways to help can consider dropping by the KidLogic Childcare on Argus Road today (May 12). The centre is having a bake sale at 3 p.m. There will also be raffle prizes with proceeds going to the Canadian Red Cross. Residents can also drop by Halton-area Red Cross offices to make a donation that will help evacuees of the Fort McMurray wildfires. The Burlington office is located at 262 Guelph Line and the Oakville office is located at 1400 Cornwall Rd. Online donations can be made at redcross. ca.
