Well, I have to say, the best thing my mom could have done for me was make that call to Big Sisters because it brought us together. Ray, throughout our relationship you have brought out the best in me. I would like to say thank you for every thing you have done. You are the `bestest' friend a girl could ask for." "I bawled my eyes out when I read that letter," Raymonde admits. "It's been a pleasure. You say to yourself, `If I had a kid, I'd want her to be just like her.' For us, this is a lifetime friend ship." This fall, Baljinder will begin earn ing her master's degree in pharmacolo gy in London, England. She will be away from home for four years, visit ing home when she can, and will keep in touch with Raymonde via e-mail. And despite the m isgivings o f som e council lors, the R egion's health and social services com mittee endorsed a request that the four m unicipal ities am end their current butt bylaw s to incorpo rate that deadline. But going sm oke free could be playing with fire, w o rried B urlington co u n c illo r L inda Schreiber. She cited hardships faced by the service indus try in areas that have already enforced a sm oking ban. `T h is 100% has becom e very w orrisom e to me," she said. "I think w e need to be cognizant o f areas around us." But by 2002, the effect will be the same, said the Region's M edical O fficer o f H ealth, Dr. Bob Nosal. "By the time we do this, everyone around us will be sm oke free," he said. He challenged the notion that businesses take a nose dive when a butt ban is in place. "T here's enough research out there to show that business goes up, not dow n," said Dr. Nosal. "T hat's not an issue." If the m unicipalities agree, it will be the sec ond tim e local sm oking bylaw s have been tw eaked to conform to a region-w ide vision. T he first cam e in May, 1998.
