The warship was a Second World War flowerclass corvette named after the Town of Oakville. It distinguished itself in the Battle of Atlantic guests heard from Oakville resident and RCN representative Glenn Woolfrey during the commemorative ceremony, which included a parade and songs played by the Lorne Scots Pipes & Drums. HMCS Oakville sailed into town as the RCN's newest ship and was blessed in the largest christening ceremony of any RCN ship during the Second World War, said Woolfrey. "She carried aboard her the minister of defence for naval Affairs, the chief of naval staff and 12 local children -- school children representing Oakville's 12 districts at the time -- to what would be known as one of the largest public spectacles in the Town's history and a remembrance of us and our constant connection with the navy in this town," said Woolfrey, the commanding officer of HMCS Star, Hamilton's naval reserve unit.
