Food for Life will team up with White Oaks Secondary School (WOSS) to host High 5 for Hunger June 5 -- and is inviting the public to take part. More than 290 pledged students, teachers and community members will gather on the high school's football field to try for a new Guinness World Record for the most high-fives in 60 seconds, and raise much-needed funds to help provide food to those in need. One-in-10 people battle hunger in Halton, according to Food for Life. The event aims to help those struggling by providing fresh, nutritious food through community partnerships. Food for Life provides food to almost 30 agen- cies and outreach programs in Oakville including: Kerr Street Mission (KSM), Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre, Dar Foundation, and Halton Multicultural Council (HMC). "We are thrilled to be partnering with White Oaks Secondary School on this unique fundraising event," said Brenda Hajdu, Food for Life's executive director, in a press release. "It's hard to imagine there are people battling hunger in Oakville, but what's easy to see is the community is dedicated to coming together to raise funds and be supportive to help those in need." T My View Improving autism services for children and youths here are approximately 40,000 children and youths in Ontario with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and prevalence rates continue to rise. Despite our government's annual investments of $190 million, the current system isn't meeting the needs of families seeking programs that are more responsive, integrated, and flexible to meet their changing needs over time. That's why we're investing an additional $333 million over five years to improve and expand autism services. It means that more children and youths with autism will receive support at the right time and services better matched to meet their individual needs. Under our new Ontario Autism Program (OAP), families will have easier access to services and shorter wait times. More children will have access to early intervention services sooner. And that means better outcomes for our young people with autism. Services will be expanded across the spectrum for all children regardless of age. And, contrary to misinformation spread by some, no child is being removed from services. In fact, 16,000 more children will receive the critical services they need each year through our improved and expanded program. Kevin Flynn Oakville MPP Ontario Labour Minister As many families have told me, we are very well-served by ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development, the lead autism service provider for this region. The world-renown organization is Ontario's largest children's treatment centre and a lifeline for so many families in our community. With $163 million in provincial funding to help build a new-state-of-the-art centre in Oakville -- featuring specially created autism facilities -- ErinoakKids will continue to be an excellent partner as we work to improve the lives of children and youths with autism. -- The Hon. Kevin Flynn is the MPP for Oakville and the Minister of Labour for Ontario. He has been the MPP for Oakville since he was first elected in 2003.
