Local author speaks at Chapters Oakville author William Mann will be dis cussing his book The Labyrinth o f the Grail at 7:30 p.m. at Chapters tomorrow (Thursday). Mann spent about eight years writing this 250page historical chronicle, which focuses on reli gion, philosophy, art, and mathematics. He contends that grail is actually knowledge rather the cup used by Christ at the Last Supper. "To me the real activity was the perpetuation of hidden knowledge," he said. The revelations in his book provide a startling link between modern day Freemasonry, the medieval Knights Templar, who have been close ly linked to the Grail throughout history, and the House of David. Mann has based much of his findings on a geometric "secret" that his great uncle revealed to him when he was a teenager. After many years of research, Mann realized that by applying this secret diagram to a map, he could pinpoint the possible location of the Tem plar's "New Jerusalem" in the New World. Further physical investigation led him to a site in Nova Scotia where, to his surprise, he found building ruins. In Memoriams DRAKE, Jack - March 29, 1998 Your love was the greatest gift o f all Sadly missed by Wife Paulie, son Peter and wife Michele, and son Matthew Any Wednesday: comedy with a moral B y C a ro l B a ld w in ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR Successful businessman plus wife plus mis tress plus a series of misunderstandings equals farce, or so many theatre pundits would say. And that conclusion is always reinforced by a set with many exits and entrances. Not so with Any Wednesday. Despite the pres ence of all those ingredients in the Oakville pro duction of this play, it is not a farce. It's a roman tic comedy that is bound to leave you with mixed feelings about the characters. And it is, without a doubt, the characters who give any romantic comedy its depth and develop the plot. In W.E.S.T.'s presentation of Any Wednesday at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, the characters are lovable, even the not-so-lovable businessman, John (Vince Carlin). But this Muriel Resnik play has another quali ty that distinguishes it from a farce - the mistress is not a ditsy blonde. Both women - Ellen (Jen nifer Rose) and Dorothy (Susan Applewhaite) are strong, bright women who seem to be stuck in a rut of circumstance and routine, which is sud denly broken by a free-association word game and a handsome stranger named Cass (Chris Ragonetti). The play takes place in the executive suite of Cleeves Inc. during the 1960s - marked by Bea tles' songs that play during set changes. Howev er, the executive suite is really Ellen's apartment, which John has purchased in the company's name for tax reasons. Cass, who is miffed at John for buying out his company then leaving it to deteriorate, drops by the suite to have it out with him. Then John's wife, Dorothy, who thinks the executive suite is Theatre Review just that, arrives to find Cass and Ellen in the apartment only to assume that they are husband and wife in town on business. Consequently, mistress meets wife, and John's delightfully dual existence begins to unravel. The characters are all convincing in their roles as they each attempt to get what they want. Ellen is particularly endearing as, on her 30th birthday, she slowly discovers that her lover's life with his, wife is nothing like he has been portraying it to her for the past two years. She is the character around whom the story revolves. The other three characters spend a lot of their time reacting to Ellen, to her actions and reactions. And Rose does a wonderful job of por traying the young mistress, gleaning laughs as well as sympathy as she deals with a life crisis and goes through a metamorphosis before the audience's collective eyes. , This wonderful play is a comedy with a moral. And it works well, but only because the four actors have managed to develop the characters into believable and likable individuals, especially the two women. You learn to care about what happens to them, and that's what brings this char acter-driven comedy to a successful conclusion. It's definitely worth the $16 admission price.
