Wednesday April 19, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER . C1 Homes & Gardens Garden design firm wins top landscape awards ardens by Design Ltd. (G.D), has won four of the top awards in a recent Landscape Ontario sponsored design competition. The Oakville firm won for Best Construction Project in Toronto West, the most prestigious award a company could receive by the Landscape Industry. This award was for an O akville residence. They were also awarded Best Residential Construction, Best Before and After Residential C onstruction and the Award o f Excellence for Woodworking/Carpentry. The awards were offered to contractors who achieved the highest standards expected in the industry. Photos and descriptions of work had to be submitted to judges who would select top finalists. After selections have been made, judges visit the job sites to decide upon the win ner. They were obviously impressed with the work delivered by G.D., in comparison to the 25 other companies compet ing for the awards. Mary Nitti and Rob Mackenzie, have built and sustained the company for over 10 years. G.D. has been featured on the HGTV Pools and Decks program and also participates in Canada Blooms, an annual garden show held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, where they build feature gar dens for the show. (See `Designs' page C2) Watch weather for plant timing The warm weather has come in time to save us again. Most gar deners are impa tient to set their plants in the gar den in full bloom or with large buds. Therefore, each year, seeds are set in flats and pots in the house in win dows or under lights. The seeds become plants and require more room to grow than anticipated. Some are placed at the edge of the light and grow tall and spindly. The early spring will allow them to be taken outdoors at least in daytime and put in the garage on cool nights. Even people with greenhouses have problems with crowding in April. I start with a bench in November, add one hanging shelf in January , a sec ond shelf in early March and erect a cold frame in April to hold sur plus plants. This year a rose bush in a pot in the greenhouse was infested with white flies on one side and aphids on the other. With the warm weather, I was able to move it outdoors and spray before they infested other plants. Some small bees arrived in the greenhouse, feeding on the wild geranium flowers but no lady bugs to take care of the aphids. Another sure sign o f spring is the mother fox training her youngsters. Late Friday night, I opened the door for the cat and he would not go out. I looked around and saw a mother fox sitting on the driveway with three cubs sniffing around the house and garage and (See `Early' page C4) L v 'Y M L EASTER MARKS THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW GARDENING SEASON let the hunt begin FLOWERING TULIPS 6 T 0 T 5 Always Fresh M ARTHA WASHINGTON GERANIUM S Full sun part shade orju s t spring inspirations VIOLAS 51/2T0TS KEG. $2.99 ` NOW »22 9 or J & PRE-FINISHED ° GERANIUMS THOUSANDS TO CHOOSE FROM or (ol U TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR EARLY GERANIUMS PRODUCTION, CHOICE COLOURS AVAILABLE GARDEN TEEPEE'S EXPANDABLE TRELLIS $ 1 0 9 9 $2 4 " $3 4 " 3 sizes.
