So far this year, Bronte beach has only been safe to swim 40 per cent of the time, compared to 64 per cent in 2015. Coronation Park east and west beaches fare a little better, passing water quality tests 70 per cent of the time this year, compared to 93 and 71 per cent, respectively, last year. Halton Region Manager of Environmental Health Nicole Mathews says the con- tributing factors to this summer's fewer safe swimming days include warmer water temperatures that promote bacteria growth, and a larger waterfowl population. "The difference between Coronation (beaches) and Bronte is the shape and also the geese," she said. Mathews noted at Bronte Beach in particular, there is more shallow water, which is more prone to higher bacteria growth. That means there is more stagnant water. Adding to the mix, there is also more waterfowl in the area this year over last.
