www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, September 15, 2016 | 22 Local residents taking steps to fight kidney disease on Sept. 17 Oakville's "kidney community" will be taking steps to fight kidney disease Saturday. Residents will not only be taking part in The Kidney Foundation of Canada's local Kidney Walk, but they will be spreading awareness of kidney disease and raising funds for the organization. "There is a growing need to increase awareness around kidney disease, particularly with an aging population and an increase in people at-risk for diabetes and hypertension," Greg Robbins, president of The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Ontario Branch, said in a media release. "Each year, the Kidney Walks raise funds to invest in important kidney disease research and support crucial programs and resources for those living with kidney disease." Halton will be one of 40 communities in Ontario hosting Kidney Walks -- locally, the event will take place at Bronte Creek Provincial Park, 1219 Burloak Dr., at 11 a.m. According to The Kidney Foundation of Canada, today, one in 10 Canadians has kidney disease and more than 1,000 Ontarians are waiting for a transplant. The number of Canadians being treated for kidney failure has tripled in the past 20 years. "Participants tell us time and time again how important it is to see they are not alone and to become involved in a community of those affected by kidney disease," noted Robbins. "It's more than just patients, too. One in 10 Canadians have kidney disease and millions more are at-risk. It's likely someone you know is or will be affected by kidney disease." The Kidney Walks are the foundation's largest community fundraiser, with this year's goal set at $740,000 in Ontario. As a result of fundraising, more than $110 million has been contributed to research and providing services to those living with chronic kidney disease and related conditions. The Kidney Foundation's goal is to support people affected by kidney disease through education; patient support programs -- such as Kidney Connect Peer Support; advocacy; and by funding research to improve understanding of kidney disease and its treatments. Kidney disease is treated with dialysis or a kidney transplant, and has no cure. For more information, or to register for the walk or donate to the cause, visit kidneywalk.ca.
