36 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 13, 2006 Blades buyers, sellers at trade deadline Layoff could slow By Herb G arbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF When the trade deadline rolls around in junior hockey, there are usu ally two groups -- buyers and sellers. The buyers are looking for veteran players to help them advance deep into the playoffs. The sellers are dealing vet erans to get help for the future. Oakville Blades head coach and gen eral manager Don Edwards believes he managed to do it all at Tuesday's Provincial Jr. A Hockey League deadline. In a buyer's move, the Blades acquired the Bancroft Hawks' leading scorer, Daniel Calitri. In a seller's, move, Edwards sent 20year-old defenceman and captain Paul Dawson to the Milton IceHawks in exchange for Brandon DeFazio and future considerations. But it's a trade that Edwards said was made possible by the signing of OHL veteran Chris Cunningham earlier in the day. "As much as we're sad to see Paul go, we felt we had the depth we could afford to do something," Edwards said. "We've added some things now but at the same time we got help for the future. We've accomplished both." Edwards said Dawson had approached him regarding a possible change of scenery. The GM said Dawson was used to playing 25-30 minutes a game under former coach Frank Camevale and "felt he wasn't going to be the impact player he was in the past." However, it was a deal that probably wouldn't have happened had the Blades not signed Cunningham, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound blueliner who spent four seasons with the St. Michael's Majors. DeFazio, an Oakville native who turned 18 the same day he joined his hometown team, had 10 goals and six assists in 36 games with Milton. Edwards said DeFazio can contribute now and for years to come. Despite Oakville scoring 20 goals in its last two games, Edwards was still looking for a little more firepower up front. He had made some inquiries about a couple of West Conference play ers, but, when it became apparent they weren't going to move, he went to Plan B and made the deal for Calitri, 19, three hours before the deadline. Calitri had 21 goals and 44 jo ints while racking up 135 penalty minutes in 41 games with Bancroft this season. "He brings grit, he's 6-foot,. 195 (pounds) so he's got good size and he plays in the comers," Edwards said. Calitri can play all three forward positions, giving the Blades many options as to what players he can line up with. Edwards said he wasn't concerned about sending the veteran Dawson, who had three goals and 19 points in 30 games with the Blades, to a conference rival. "They also have to fit him into their puzzle," he said. "At the end of the day, we've definitely upgraded the team this year and we'll have 16 or 17 returning vets next year. That's a nice thing because I think we've got a great chance this year and we're going to give it a hel luva go." As for replacing Dawson as captain, Edwards said it will be a decision that is made in the next few days. "There's a number of players that deserve it," he said. down Indianapolis Continued from page 35 of YMCA Canada Archives photograph courtesy Looking back to the sod-turning of the Oakville YMCA-YWCA in 1967.
