The O akville BeaveT, Friday F e b ru a ry 17, 2 0 0 6 - 9 Philip R obert Blake Businessman and philanthropist A funeral service was held Wednesday in the chapel at Oakview Funeral Home for Philip Robert Blake who died at his Oakville home last Friday at age 70. Interment followed at Streetsville Public Cemetery. The local businessman established Centrifugal Coaters and supported the arts, local heritage and health care and children's services. He was a prominent businessman, politician, guru entrepreneur, world traveler, avid reader and historian. Born in Toronto on Sept. 10, 1935, Blake was raised and educated in Streetsville and Port Credit. He studied industrial business management at McMaster University. Blake worked at Ford of Canada in industrial engineering and later with Canada Brick Company as VicePresident of Manufacturing. He then established Centrifugal Coaters Inc. in Oakville with his brother, encompass ing three plants specializing in paint applications. In Midland, Ontario, he and his brother developed WYE Heritage Marina, Canada's largest fresh water marina. Most recently Blake was the lead investor in a local development group that positively transformed both the residential and retail core of downtown Oakville. Blake and his wife Susanne White-Blake were strong supporters of the Olde Oakville Heritage Society helping to build the Heritage Parkette on Navy Street. The Blakes are long time members of the Oakville Club. In 1995, Blake was nominated by Ernst and Young for the Turn Around Entrepreneur Of The Year award. A seasoned politician, Blake partici pated in many election campaigns, municipal, provincial and federal, and ran as provincial candidate in 1971 in the Halton East riding. He acted as campaign manager and advisor to Robert Nixon in the 1975 Ontario elec tion and fundraised for the federal Liberal Party for many years. He was a member of the Laurier Club and a member of the Oakville Chapter of the Masonic Lodge and served as Worshipable Master. Blake supported the arts including the Oakville Symphony Orchestra (Maestro Club), Canadian Opera Company, the new Opera House, The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, Stratford and Shaw Festivals and more. He was a gold sponsor to OakvilleTrafalgar Memorial Hospital, Credit Valley Hospital, Foster Parents Plan and a director of the Children's Aid Society. During his retirement he enjoyed summers with his family at his beloved Somerset Island in Georgian Bay. The Blakes' thirst for knowledge and excitement prompted them to travel around the world. Blake is survived by his wife Susanne, son Robert Blake, daughters Catherine Elliott, Karen Carnevale and Cheryl Babarci, and grandchildren Kelsey, Makayla and Sebastian. He was predeceased by his brother Gordon Blake. In memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Lung Association.
