The Oakville Beaver, Friday F e b ru a ry 17, 2 0 0 6 - 1 9 Oakville warned race doomed by over population Unless people abandon their tradi tional habits of thought and adjust their thinking to present day realities the human race is in danger of extinction. This was the grim warning given an audience of about 200 people assembled in Oakville Trafalgar High School audito rium Tuesday evening by Dr. Brock Chisholm, former Oakville boy, one-time director of the World Health Association of the United Nations, and a writer and lecturer on world problems. The meeting was sponsored by the Oakville Branch of the United Nations Association in Canada, and Dr. Chisholm was speaking on "Problems of the popu lation explosion." In the course of an eloquent talk last ing more than an hour he delivered world. The essence of Dr. Chisholm' s message was that the present increase in the world population, if it is allowed to continue unchecked, will lead to a catas trophe for mankind in the near future. "If we continue to increase at the rate at which we are now increasing," he said, "In 35 years we would add more to our total numbers than we have added in the previous 200,000 years." The population would double in 35 years, he said. It would dou ble again in the next 20 years, and double once more in the succeed ing 15 years. "This.is a different kind of world to anything known to our ancestors," said Dr. Chisholm. "The conditions of survival would not have been recognized by our parents or grandparents," he said. In tribal days, he explained, there was a sound reason for wanting to increase the popula tion, as the security of the com munity was in proportion to its size. "An increase in the number of persons no longer provides secu rity," he said, "so it is necessary for us to look at this situation from a new point of view; We have a bad habit of teaching our children that it is right and good for children to believe what their parents believed. Those who have doubted this have been called Reds and other bad names." -- Feb. 10, 1966, Oakville Journal Record Factory Authorized some powerful thrusts at some cherished beliefs, which he considered sources of great danger in the present state of the WAREHOUSE SALE O DAYS ONLY - Saturday, Feb. 18th and Sunday, Feb. 19th Low-income residents in the region are more likely to use the money they have for rent and bills than on healthy food for themselves and their families. That's one of the findings in the Halton health department's annual Nutritious Food Basket report, which measures the cost of an adequate diet against the finan cial resources of those at the low-income level. For example, the report illustrates the case of a single mother living in Halton with a seven-year-old daughter who receives assistance through Ontario Works. Her income would be $1,212.92 per month, with rent accounting for $849 of that amount and food, about $236. That would only leave around $125 for things like heat, hydro, transportation, non-prescription drugs and unexpected expenses. "Families who find themselves in this kind of situation are more likely to pay the rent and necessary bills and have little or no money left for food," the Food Basket report states. A Nutritious Food Basket survey was conducted with six grocery stores in Halton last year to determine the price of a healthy diet. This showed the average cost for a family of four to eat healthy is $120.96 per week' GUAR Fe e d l o w e s t p r ic e s o f j h e y e a r PIANOS, DIG ffALS, KEYBOARDS & GUITARS (w e s t o f G u e lp h Line) 2 3 8 8 Fairview St. BURLINGTON 905- 639-4465 w w w .y a m a h a m u s ic c e n tre .c o m STEVE LffiATES 'MUSIC CENTRE The perfect Solution for every Resolution BRING HOME THE TOTAL FITNESS SOLUTION Body Solid 7 SERIES SMITH STARTING AT DON'T PAY TIL 2007 NO Interest NO Paym ents NOW. 2499 Reg. *2999 *899 Elliptical Smooth Magnetic Resistance ·A ttachm ents extra NOW j l Q J J STARTING AT Reg. *2499 Bowflex 7 Series 2.0 HP Continuous Duty Motor Contact .
