Patients, caregivers, family members and friends gathered for the fifth Greater Toronto Area Multiple Myeloma March, which took place at the Meadowvale Community Centre in Mississauga. The Myeloma Canada signature event is among a number of Multiple Myeloma Marches that have taken place since 2009. To date, events have raised $2 million in support of finding a cure for the deadly blood cancer that affects 7,500 Canadians each year. Although there have been advancements in treatment to help prolong life expectancy, there is no cure for the cancer that makes up 1.3 per cent of all new cancer cases in Canada and 1.9 per cent of all cancer deaths, according to My- eloma Canada. It is most often diagnosed between those aged 65-70 years old and is slightly more common in men than women. Dan and Brenda Wigle noted it's a type of cancer not many people know of or speak about. Dan, a Mississauga resident who used to teach in Oakville, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma six years ago and had no idea what he and his family were up against, his wife Brenda said. "It came as quite a shock," she noted. "In his career as a teacher, he probably took off three days in 35 years." Brenda, 76, said her husband always took part in high level sports and when he retired, he was at the gym every day. Dan was also a strong proponent of keeping active and healthy, and never missed an annual physical. These days, Brenda said her 76-year-old husband has good days and bad. "Some days he doesn't have energy.
