Copperheads of the Coastal Plains League. Bratton, 25, played two seasons (2012-13) for the Copperheads in the summer collegiate baseball league. He pitched 22 games over two seasons with a 2.88 earned-run average over 34 1/3 innings, striking out 36 and walking just six. The past summer he coached the Medicine Hat Mavericks to a 53-20 record in the Western Major Baseball League, a Canadian collegiate summer league. "He did a terrific job this past summer as a head coach in Medicine Hat and we believe he possesses all the qualities necessary to be successful in Asheboro as well," said Copperheads general manager David Camp. "He is a real student of the game and his coaching style and philosophy are exactly what we were looking for." Bratton played collegiate baseball at the University of West Alabama and is currently the pitching coach at Georgia Southwestern University. Bratton is looking forward to returning to the Copperheads, where as a player he helped the team record a franchise record in wins. "Asheboro is the place I formed some lifelong friendships and I'm very excited to be able to return," Bratton said. "Hopefully, we can add to the excitement at McCrary -- Herb Garbutt Park." They will swim five miles each in five Great Lakes in 24 hours. Their adventure begins tonight (Friday) when the group departs Oakville. Starting early Saturday, this quest will see the team brave the waters of Lake Superior at Brimley, Mich. at 4 a.m., Lake Michigan in Mackinaw City, Mich. at 6:30 a.m., Lake Huron in Sarnia, Ont. at 12:30 p.m., Lake Erie in Port Stanley, Ont. at 3 p.m. Monday and Lake Ontario in Oakville at 6 p.m. Swim supports the Great Lakes Trust Everyone is invited to jump in by joining the team at Coronation Park in Oakville at 6 p.m. for the final leg, a swim to the buoy and back to finish off the adventure. Some of the team members have successfully crossed Lake Ontario, but stopping at only one Great Lake isn't an option. The team is swimming for a cause -- the Great Lakes Trust -- a fund set up to support individuals and organizations that are working to make sure the Great Lakes are a sustainable resource for drinking water, recreation and inspiration across communities and generations. Working with Lake Ontario Waterkeeper and the Hamilton Community Foundation, the Great Lakes Trust is a community of swimmers, academics, artists and adventurers aiming to raise $25,000 to help individuals and organizations think and act through small grants to support scientific and historical research, artistic expression, public education, grassroots outreach and community engagement to defend the Great Lakes.
