Thompson CHURCH A MUSIC EDITOR If I hadn't given up stamp collecting in my early teens (I seem to recall the development another type of post office along about then!), I would most cert ainly be giving all my albums away in this year 1953. Because, if this new animal series of Canad ian stamps should happen to exert even the slightest influence on international stamp design, I'd I'd be one collector who would be having his fill of philately in something under fourteen sec onds. Thursday, April 30th, 1953 Revision Needed One of the peculiarities of govern ment was made obvious on Saturday afternoon, when the new motel in Oakville opened. Most modern in con struction, handsomely appointed and with plenty o f parking space it lies ~ good rr,wi within the town limits, only a broad jump south of the Queen Eliza beth Highway. There is a large park ing lot. North from this runs a drive which stops short of the Queen Eliza beth Highway. This means that any motorists who desire to stop for the night must go a round-about way to reach the motel. They have to drive south on the 7th Line, then along Cross Avenue and north into the parking lot. It's a pretty poor ar rangement fq f the tourist -- who is, we should all remember, the life-blood of the Ontario economy. Where the silliness of the Pro vincial Highway Department's atti tude to entrances from the Queen Elizabeth Highway comes in is that you have only to drive past the 7th Line and you can drive off the high way directly into a service station belonging to a large oil company. Or, in another few miles you can drive directly into another on the south side. If you are coming from Toronto there are service stations on the north side you can also enter directly. It is an interesting idea, this newspaper thinks, that service to motorists which are provided by large oil companies are quite all right on a dirct basis from the Queen Eliza beth Highway, whereas service to motorists provided by a motel are not. Possibly the size of ownership o f the two enterprises has something to do with it? This newspaper fails to see any difference between the service of gas, oil, water, etc., and the service of somewhere to sleep. It is high time that the Hon. Mr. Doucett gave some thought to the fact that the people's taxes spent by his department are to be spent to benefit the treasury of the Province, either by not being spent -- which doesn't seem to be within the power of any government -- or to be spent in such a way as to assist the Province in deriving income from the tourists. There should be a sharp eye cast on such silly regulations as the one which stops the- entrance of this motel, and any other, from opening directly onto the Queen Elizabeth highway. Originally no enterprise could have an entrance onto this highway, w h i c h was to be a speed thoroughfare only. But now that the rules have been broken for one service to motor ists, they certainly should be broken for another and equally important one. course, for it is not responsible for this situation. It can only be lead on the council if it has not brought the matter to the attention of the depart ment of highways, which is directly responsible. We have seen accident after acci dent happen on the railway crossing where the Lower Middle Road bisects necessarv action was takpn i: petore necessary action was taken. It is to be hoped that we are not going gome to have to wait until there is a nasty accident at the 8th Line and the Queen Elizabeth Highway before the department takes the easy, and inex pensive steps necessary to provide protection to those coming from Tor onto who wish to turn down this road. Township council should camp on the tail of the provincial department and not be satisfied until the neces sary protective steps have been taken.
