continued from p.14 In an email Oct. 19, Coady told the Oakville Beaver the leash-free trails would continue to be accessible. "The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Ontario Parks is not considering nor has any plans to close the campground leash-free trail for the spring of 2017," he wrote. A sign will be posted at the park this week to inform users of the operational change and the Ontario Parks Bronte Creek webpage will also be updated to reflect the change, he added. Coady said Ontario Parks makes "every effort to ensure the public is informed when operational changes are made at a provincial park. "We may provide updates on the Ontario Parks website, use social media channels, provide updates to the Friends organizations (if applicable) and handout and post notices at the park to park visitors and members of the public," he said. In some circumstances, a public notice may be published or mailed out, such as formal park management planning processes and Environmental Assessment Act -- Class Environmental Assessment projects. Ontario Labour Minister and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn admitted the changes caught him off-guard, but he's committed to speaking to Natural Resources and Forestry Minister Kathryn McGarry to get to the bottom of the matter. He said the provincial park has been a big part of the community, helping charitable groups by allowing the use of its space for fundraising walks or picnics. It's also unique in that it's more urbanized than other provincial parks. "Over the years, as development has taken place in Burlington and Oakville, it's become much more of a site perhaps more suited to be a Conservation Authority than a provincial park," he said. Flynn continued when you think about provincial parks, you typically think of a place to go camping for a week or participate in wildlife programs. He sees Bronte Creek as a place that could run the kinds of successful and professional programs that Conservation Halton operates at Rattlesnake Point, Glen Eden and Crawford Lake. "I'm questioning now whether the Province shouldn't be transferring the land over," he said. "If it can't deliver the programs or it's not used to delivering the programs or doesn't have the money to deliver the programs or the program's not suited to the provincial parks program -- whatever the reason is -- then perhaps it's time to take a look at the community." Flynn said he'd be speaking with McGarry and Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to see "if there isn't something that can come out of this that is proactive and positive." He'll also be looking into the possibility of keeping the parking lots, set for closure, open. As for the skating rink, he likened the situation to a car that just ran out steam. While it can invest in another skating rink, he asked is it really the provincial government's business to run a skating rink? He thinks of it as being a Town-provided service. Coady offered there are other outdoor and indoor rinks that have been built by the Town of Oakville and City of Burlington area since the Bronte rink opened in the 1970s. He also noted Ontario Parks is willing to work with any members of the community to discuss partnership options for the off-leash trail -- where a solid business case can support the proposal.
